Puerto Rico is located in the Caribbean, between the Caribbean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean. It is about 1,000 miles southeast of Miami, Florida. Puerto Rico has a surface area of approximately 3,425 square miles.

The current population of Puerto Rico is approximately 3,615,086. The most populated area of Puerto Rico is the capitol, San Juan.

Culture

Puerto Rico is a melting pot of cultures. A lot of influences come from Taino Indians, Spain and Africa.

Politics

Puerto Rico is a self-governing commonwealth in association with the United States. The chief of state is the President of the United States of America. The head of government is an elected Governor. There are two legislative chambers: the House of Representatives, 51 seats, and the Senate, 27 seats.

Tourism

Puerto Rico is a dream spot for tourists. With its miles of white sand beaches, tropical rain forests, and mountains, it is hard to say you didn't enjoy your visit. The most popular time of tourism in Puerto Rico is between December and April. But if you want to avoid the crowds you should come May and November.

History

On November 19, 1493 Puerto Rico was discovered by Christopher Columbus on his second voyage to claim lands for the rulers of Spain, King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella. In 1493 the island was called Borinquen by the Indians who lived there. Columbus named it San Juan Bautista.
