Weekly Update
We are so excited to wrap up the last week of school for the 2022 year. Thank you all for the support you have given as we have grown this year. Mrs. Birklid and I are continually impressed with the students and families here at Foothills. We love the Falcon Family!
Please remember to write your child's name in their coats, hats, and gloves. Our lost and found is exploding. We will have the lost and found out from again during school hours. Please stop by to check it out. All items left on December 16th will get donated. Thank you!
Zones of Regulation
Here are some ways you can incorporate Zones at home:
- When your child is angry, you can say, "I can see you are upset. What zone are you in? Let's take some deep breaths together." You can take 4 deep breaths with them.
- When they are crying you can say, "Looks like you are having some big feelings. What zone are you in? Oh, the blue zone? Yes, let's talk about what is making you feel those big feelings." You can say, "Oh that sounds hard. I'm sorry that is happening. It's okay to be sad."
- When they are starting to get frustrated you can say, "I see that this is frustrating. What zone are you in? The yellow zone? Okay- what can we do to help you get your body calmer?" Sometimes big body movements can help. Ask them to race you to the fence or to the kitchen. Ask them to help you by to carrying something heavy to another room. This gives them a helper role and gives them some big muscle work to exert the stress.
Helping them understand that everyone has big feelings, but they can help themselves by choosing tools to get their bodies regulated. We can guide them with prompts- but we push them to be self aware.
Attendance
An unexcused absence is when a student is absent from school, and the parent or guardian has not called to inform the school of the reason for the absence. An excused absence is when a student is absent from school, and you communicate with the office.
You can call and leave a message with a reason for the absence 24 hours a day at (360) 829-3355 or email at mclay@whiteriver.wednet.edu
Active Learner
Our character trait of the month for December and January is Active Learner.
An Active Learner looks like focusing on the speaker: eyes on, body still, listening ears.
It means you are ignoring distractions around you.
You take ownership of your learning.
You don't give up, even when it is hard, also called perseverance.
