Board Meeting Details

This regular Board of Education meeting was held in person at the District Office.

1. Call to Order

The meeting was called to order at 6:30 p.m.

2. Approval of Meeting Agenda

The agenda was approved.

3. Adjourn To Closed Session

The meeting adjourned to closed session at 6:31 pm to discuss: The placement of individual students in special education programs and other matters relating to individual students. 5 ILCS 120/2(c)(10).

4. Reconvene to Open Session

The meeting reconvened to open session at 7:00 pm.

5. What's Good in 109

Mr. Steckling presented the monthly What's Good in 109 report, highlighting:


-A World Read Aloud Day project that DPS 109 worked on, featuring students and staff along from all six schools, along with the Mayor of Deerfield, police, fire, park district, library, and DHS, and two Board of Ed members.


-Shepard's very fun reward for the highest rising MAP test scorers, the chance to throw a pie at a teacher!



Caruso is our featured school of the month, as we showcase the 3 C's in one building:

CHALLENGE - staff members shadowing students for the day to learn what their experience is like

COLLABORATE - CMS students traveling to DHS to perform with their band

CREATE - Elle B. from Caruso won the GEG Challenge from Google and was recently honored at a local conference.


Our special guest was 6th grader Eli. He talked about a special project his class worked on that required them to face an unexpected obstacle.

6. Superintendent's Report

Mr. Simeck thanked everyone for a smooth kindergarten registration process and encouraged anyone with an incoming student to register sooner rather than later.


He thanked the Shepard community for putting on a great event in their recent students vs. first responders charity basketball game and commended School Resource Officer Maldonado on her basketball skills!


The steering committee for our master facility planning toured a peer school last month and plans to meet next week as they continue their process. People can follow along on the journey at www.dps109.org/ourfuture.


Caruso's auditorium is nearing the completion point! He showed two pictures from inside the theater.


Mr. Simeck has had some recent meetings with legislators where he reinforced and affirmed the board's legislative agenda to them.

7. Community Participation Relative to Matters on the Meeting Agenda (Policy 2:230)

There were no speakers present.

INFORMATIONAL ITEMS

8.1. Freedom of Information Requests (Policy 2:250)

Dr. Filippi presented six requests. More information on these are available in the meeting packet in BoardBook.

8.2. Strategic Plan and Assessment Update

Dr. Arnold presented this report. She went over Panorama data in several key areas like self-management, social awareness, grit, emotional regulation, and growth mindset.


She discussed the latest academic data from MAP scores. Students across all grade levels are making expected growth in math and reading. You can watch more for a more detailed report and to review her slides.

8.3. Recommendation to Appoint Assistant Treasurer

Dr. Filippi presented the recommendation to the board.

8.4. Summer Work - Building Envelope

Dr. Filippi presented the package of work to the board for masonry and door replacement work. Details can be found in the BoardBook agenda. This will be up for action at a future BOE meeting.

8.5. Draft 2023/24 Board of Education Regular Meeting Dates

Mr. Simeck presented a draft of dates to the board for next year. They will be voted upon next month.

ACTION ITEMS

9.1. Consent Agenda*

Personnel items were approved.

Bills for payment were approved.

9.2. Treasurer's Report

The report was approved.

9.3. Approval of Meeting Minutes from January 19, 2023 (Policy 2:220)

The minutes were approved.

9.4. Resolution to Appoint Assistant Treasurer

The resolution was approved.

9.5. Resolution Approving Surety Bond for Assistant Treasurer

The resolution was approved.

9.6. Recommendation to Approve Two-Way Radio Purchase

The recommendation was approved.

9.7. Intergovernmental Agreement for Downtown Deerfield TIF District

The IGA was approved.

9.8. Student Settlement Agreement

The agreement was approved.

10. Committee Reports (Policy 2:150)

Mrs. Jakymiw talked about the Equity Symposium she recently attended. She has also met with some local elected representatives including Rep. Schneider and an individual from Sen. Duckworth’s office. She also showed a video from TrueNorth.


Mr. Begley said that the Executive Development Committee just met and there will be a closed session in March with pertinent information.


Mrs. Weber attended the ED-RED dinner and reported back on it.

11. Open Community Participation (Policy 2:230)

There were no speakers present.

12. Board/Superintendent Other

President Montgomery thanked Mrs. Arnold for her assessment & strategic plan update. She thanked Mr. Steckling for What’s Good in 109. She thanked Mrs. Rudd for her work on kindergarten registration. She thanked Mrs. Jakymiw & Mrs. Wener for the time they have spent on the advocacy front. She thanked Drs. Filippi & Bialk for their work on the two-way radio purchase. She congratulated Dr. Fisher on being nominated for national HR person of the year.


Mr. Simeck thanked Mrs. Jakymiw and Mrs. Wener for their advocacy work.
