Title I Literacy Session
May 19th, 2021
Literacy is POWERFUL!
Literacy is Powerful!
Literacy provides us all with a magical power! When you can read and write, it allows you to have greater self-confidence and independence. Once you have this power, you can tackle the world with more ease and assurance. The ability to seek out and understand information gives us all the freedom to make choices, to advocate for ourselves, and to learn more about our community and world.
We will be presenting two live Zoom sessions concerning literacy and would love for you to attend. During the sessions, the IAL/ENRICH Grant Team will provide you with information about how to best support your child at home, current literacy initiatives in our schools, and summer reading information. If you are unable to attend one of the live Zoom sessions, you may view the recorded sessions on this platform once we complete them.
Please see below for the RSVP button to join our live Zoom session on Wednesday, May 19th at 9:00 PM for parents or Wednesday, May 19th at 3:30 PM. Once you've RSVP'd, a Zoom link email will be sent to you. You will also find literacy resources below for you to use to help your child at home. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact me at tprice@jasper.k12.ga.us or 706-468-6350 ext. 122.
MOBILE LITERACY LAB
The Mobile Literacy Lab was funded by the IAL Grant that Jasper County received for an enhancement project aimed at improving early literacy in our community in a unique and creative way. The grant focus area targets the primary and elementary age groups, however the Mobile Literacy Lab will be available to ALL students and families. The mobile literacy lab will provide learning opportunities that align with the specific skill areas used to target literacy instruction. A variety of books will be available to peruse as well as an internet connection and devices that our families can utilize.
Big Purple was designed to meet a variety of needs. There are areas where literacy skills can be targeted for small group instruction, a cozy reading nook for independent reading, tables for integrated literacy projects, and a couple of bars with stools that students can use when browsing the internet. The set up lends itself to a variety of purposes that support improving literacy.
The mobile lab will serve multiple purposes, including communicating with parents and community members about school and district goals, expectations, and appropriate activities to help build literacy and to provide students with an opportunity to learn in a different setting and environment. Big Purple will be a great engagement tool for our community.
Through a checkout process, JCCS will provide the bus for use by teachers throughout the school year. It can be utilized to provide differentiated learning opportunities aimed at improving literacy.
Big Purple will be used as an outreach tool. Literacy is the key to communication. However, not everyone has the resources for a large home library and/or transportation. Our mobile lab will allow our community to have access to books. Many areas also struggle with inconsistent internet coverage. The mobile lab has wifi connectivity that can help our citizens that live in more remote locations. We believe that community outreach for literacy is vital for progressing our students and community.
Ultimately, achievement in literacy is at the core of all student success. We believe that the JCCS mobile literacy lab will help us achieve the goal of educating, informing, and encouraging our students and their families to continue to strive towards the goal of literacy of ALL students.
