From the Principal
Alpenglow Families,
Time flies when you are having a good time! Students are making tremendous progress in all academic areas. I am proud of the growth our students are making! Learning is important to our Alpenglow students. Your involvement directly impacts the success of our students. The Alpenglow staff appreciates your support and thanks to you for all you do to encourage learning at home and emphasize the importance of school.

2022 AK STAR and Alaska Science Assessment
Our new statewide summative assessment AK STAR or Alaska System of Academic Readiness will be given to students in grades 3 – 10 in the areas of English Language Arts and Math. The Alaska Science Assessment is given in grades 5, 8, and 10. The purpose of a large-scale, summative assessment is to provide parents and schools an overall picture of a student’s progress in meeting the Alaska standards at their grade level. The assessment is taken on the computer and is not timed.
These results will also allow our teaching staff to guide classroom instruction based on areas of need. The testing window is from March 28th – to April 8th.
Alpenglow’s testing schedule is as follows:
3/28 -3/29 5th and 6th grade Language Arts and Math
3/30 5th grade Science
3/31 - 4/1 3rd and 4th-grade Language Arts and Math
Please be mindful of these dates when scheduling appointments, vacations, etc. If you have questions regarding AK STAR assessments or scheduled testing dates for Alpenglow, please feel free to contact Principal Demetree-Trombley at 742-3300.

PTA - PARENT / TEACHER ASSOCIATION
Are you looking to become more involved or know someone who is? Contact our PTA at cori@alpenglowpta.org and ask where you are needed. They do a lot for our school and could use a few volunteers to help with various events. You do not need to come to all the PTA meetings to volunteer. They are looking for individuals who can help once or twice per year. The PTA’s next meeting is Wednesday, March 2, 2022.
THINGS TO REMEMBER
If your student is going to be absent, please call 742-3300, mark them absent in Q Parent Connect, or email the teacher and alpenglowoffice@asdk12.org

News from the Nurse
Alpenglow Families,
Our school wants to clarify some items surrounding the Anchorage School District’s new masking policy.
The new policy started this Monday, February 28th. Here are the highlights:
- Masks are now optional for students, staff, and visitors to Anchorage School District facilities.
- The five-day quarantine is still in effect for a positive COVID test result or quarantine by choice in lieu of testing for symptoms. Students and staff must wear a mask for days six through ten upon return to an Anchorage School District facility.
- Other COVID mitigation practices and testing requirements have not changed and will continue to be enforced. (We do not accept home tests or antigen test results).
The Anchorage School District continues to be symptom-free.
Thanks very much,
Nurse Jeanine and Principal Demetree-Trombley

Counselor's Corner
Character Matters
March’s character trait focus is on Cooperation. ‘Cooperation’ means to work or act together or jointly for a common purpose or benefit.
Thank you for helping your student experience the benefits of ‘cooperation’ by listening, sharing, taking turns and compromising; and by being encouraging to each other. Just as musk oxen form a circle to defend their young, working together keeps us strong. As Helen Keller reminds us, “Alone we can do so little; together we can do so much.”

PE News
In the month of February we ice skated, played broomball, used snow saws to build ice forts, and went sledding. Lots of fun outside play!
Due to all of the ice, we had to come back inside but finished the month off strong with a volleyball unit.
Did you know that our ice rink is entirely maintained by super volunteers lead by Pete McEnaney and Dave Beckett? Both gentlemen had children who attended Alpenglow. Even though their kids are grown, they continue to give back to our community. Thank you Pete and Dave!
