What is Women's History Month?

Women's History Month started in 1981 as a week-long campaign to honor the achievements and contributions of women in American society. In 1987, The National Women's History Project petitioned that Women's History Month become a month-long observance and one that is observed annually. This year's theme is Providing Healing, Promoting Hope.

Providing Healing, Promoting Hope brings recognition to women historically being healers and leaders in peace. It encourages us to look to the past and the future to encourage women to stand up for peace, healing, comfort, and dignity, and to celebrate the achievements of women thus far.

#BreakTheBias

Every year, International Women's Day has a new theme to focus on to advance equity for women. This year's theme is #BreakTheBias.

#BreakTheBias is a social media campaign urging people to fight for equality, celebrate the achievements of women, and recognize bias in their daily lives.

What is Equal Pay Day?

Equal Pay Day in the United States is used to bring awareness to the gap in pay between genders. The date differs year to year and is chosen based on the difference between the average median wages of women and men working in the US. Equal Pay Day is a Tuesday to symbolize how far into the next week women need to work to make the same as men did the week prior.

Women's wages in 2021, as a percentage of white, non-Hispanic men's wages, were:

  • Asian Women: 87%
  • White Women: 79%
  • Black Women: 63%
  • Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander Women: 63%
  • Native American/Native Alaskan Women: 60%
  • Hispanic Women: 50%
