Husky Happenings
December 2017
Husky Parents,
The holiday season is upon us, and excitement is in the air at Metzler. Our Huskies are actively involved in collecting non-perishable items for those in need, rehearsing for holiday shows, in addition to working hard each and every day. We have many exciting events planned for our students. Please be sure to keep your calendar of events in a handy location so that you can join in on the fun as your schedules permit.
Special Husky thanks are extended to the music departments at Hofius, Klein Oak, and Metzler for their upcoming scheduled concerts that we look forward to every year. Our music department is to be also be commended on the wonderful Veterans Day program that our third graders presented. What a great opportunity for our Huskies to show appreciation to our veterans! Many thanks to our wonderful enrichment teachers and Mrs. Baker for organizing these events.
Sincerely,
Lakita Combs

Ask your child, “What makes an effective learner?”
Along our journey of learning there will be times when things could get difficult, when we just can’t seem to make sense of the material we are learning, or when we simply become overwhelmed with the amount of information we are ingesting. The first step to dealing with these types of challenges is to simply recognize that they exist and that they might shake us up or challenge us a little, but effective learners are prepared for these learning challenges. Effective learners work hard, and are curious and persistent. They are goal setters and getters who self-reflect often. They embrace challenge and are not afraid to fail because they know they can learn from their mistakes.

Literacy Day
Our Literacy Day theme this year is Gingerbread. Mrs. Marquez, Mrs. Mohalley, and Metzler’s MELT committee are to be commended once again in planning for this year’s Literacy Day celebration. This dynamic team models an appreciation for what is found in the written word and share their love for reading with everyone with whom they interact. Because of this, we have developed strong readers and writers.
Dressing for the Weather
Now that the weather is changing and temperatures are dropping, dressing your child appropriately for the weather is important. Students will go outdoors for recess, weather permitting. It is important for the students to go out in the fresh air and exercise. Please be sure your child has a winter coat, gloves or mittens, and perhaps a hat.
FROM THE COUNSELOR
If you are in need of a jacket for your child/children, please contact Terri Baker, Metzler School Counselor, at 832.484.7955 or tbaker@kleinisd.net.
Thank you for all your donations which made our annual food drive a huge success! Because of your generosity, we helped 6 families with holiday food and turkeys. Husky hugs to Husky PAWS and PTO volunteers for donating your time to organize the donations and make the baskets.

From the Library
Make plans to attend Metzler’s Book Fair. A variety of books for children and parents will be on display and for sale. This will be a great time to buy holiday gifts! Teacher “wish lists” and gift certificates will also be available during buying week. Proceeds from the Book Fair will be used for new library books and instructional materials for your children at Metzler. The Book Fair flyer is attached. If you have questions or would like to volunteer, please contact Pat Mohalley at pmohalley@kleinisd.net or 832-484-7952.
Birthday Book Club
Students at Metzler have the opportunity to become members of the Husky Birthday Book Club. Parents, family and friends may celebrate and honor a student by choosing a book from the “Husky Books” to be added to the Metzler library for all to enjoy. A bookplate with the child’s name and the special occasion will be placed in the book, and a presentation will be made in the child’s class.
The cost for a “Husky Book” is $15.00. Checks can be made to Metzler Elementary. Please contact Pat Mohalley at 832-484-7952 or pmohalley@kleinisd.net to arrange a presentation. This is a wonderful way to celebrate a special occasion such as a birthday, good grades, a new sibling, or an award while adding to our Metzler library collection!
Thank you Watch D.O.G.S.
Thank you to the Watch D.O.G.S. who volunteered their time in November. We welcome our Watch D.O.G.S. on campus as often as possible. As “Heroes of the Hallways”, they participate as mentors, classroom helpers, and an extra set of eyes and ears. You can make a HUGE difference on our campus just by your willingness to serve! Fathers and father-figures, this is an awesome opportunity to get involved
