The Week of September 12 , 2022
What's Happening at DATA
Sometimes the shortest weeks are the busiest weeks!
The campus has been in full spirit mode for Homecoming week. So many students participated in theme days and of course, all of their spirit gear and homecoming mums on game day. We are also academically spirited as we celebrate 35 National Merit Scholarship commended students as well as one National Merit Semifinalist.
Many of our teachers are putting together plans for students to participate in some off campus learning experiences; learning about art installations, competing in science competitions, and connecting with practicing architects. My goal is that all DATA students get multiple opportunities throughout the year to participate in off campus learning.
I would also like to start a monthly guest speaker series to begin in October. If you are in the fields of architecture, web development, programming, art design, photography, animation, or audio/video production or know someone in the field, let me know. I would love to have you on our campus to share your story and how you got to where you are today.
Thank you to all that have completed the Fall Parent Survey. If you haven't had a chance yet, please take a moment and let is know how we are doing so far this school year.
Until next time!
What does it mean to be College and Career Ready?
At NEISD, we support students in a multitude of ways to nurture their learning and work with each child so that they can demonstrate academic growth and critical thinking skills. To do this, we provide quality programs to support your child's interests and abilities. A byproduct is that when your child graduates, they will be able to pursue a path in college, enter into a career, enlist in the military, and be ready for life as an adult.
The Texas Education Agency (TEA) has also told schools that student performance in certain areas will qualify that student to meet the TEA's definition of being College and Career Ready. If a student is qualified as meeting all that is needed to be considered College and Career Ready, then that positively impacts our school accountability. While there is a TEA component, we know that providing rigorous courses and earning college credit now, and studying and working towards an Industry Based Certification is what is ultimately beneficial for students. Students are learning how to think critically, how to advocate for themselves, how to work collaboratively, how to manage their time, and how to work in a diverse learning environment. Skills that will set them up for success in whichever path they pursue after high school.
To be considered College Ready a student must have:
Met the TSIA Criteria
or
Earned credit in a dual credit course
or
Earned an Associate's Degree
or
Earned OnRamps course credit
or
Meets criteria on an AP Exam
To be considered Career Ready a student must have:
Earned an IBC
or
Graduates with completed IEP and workforce readiness
or
Graduates with an Advanced Diploma plan and received specialized services
or
Earns a Level I or Level II certificate
To be Qualified as Military ready, a student must:
Enlist in the Armed Forces/Texas National Guard
(This qualification is currently under review, I didn't want to leave it out.)
Put some of the criteria together from the first 2 and your student is qualified as College and Career Ready.
That's a lot of information! CCMR is a tool that will help us, help your student set clear goals and a plan on what needs to be accomplished by graduation.
