Warning Signs
It is important to know what is phishing and what is a legitimate message from a bank or credit card company. Phishers often put a lot of effort into making their sites and emails look as legitimate as possible, but there are things to look for that can help users spot a phishing scam. These are just a few:
• The link or URL is not correct. Users should look at the end of the URL, where the actual domain is listed. If whatever immediately preceding the “.com” or other suffix is not the name of the intended site, it is almost definitely a fish. Also, any URLs starting with numbers are most likely directed to an IP address, a sure sign of a scam.
• The greeting is generic. These messages are sent out in large batches, so the greeting will not contain any part of the recipient’s name, something one’s credit company would almost sure include.
