Creating Good Digital Citizens
Resources and Information for Shady Grove Parents
What can you do to foster safe and productive digital relationships at home?
- Direct your children to safe and reliable sites for research (Start with HCPS’s OneSearch!)
- Encourage your children to use good manners and to remember the “golden rule” when online.
- Emphasize to your children that nothing (not even a “snapchat”) ever really goes away once it is released into the digital community. Remind them always to THINK before posting.
- Be the keeper of the passwords ….and check ALL of your children’s accounts regularly.
- Monitor your children’s screen time, and encourage them to share with you their favorite sites and apps…you may love them, too!
- Finally, always remember to model and to practice good digital citizenship yourself.
Always start with OneSearch
This HCPS online resource includes a wealth of databases, websites, images, and full text materials...available to you and your child whether at home or at school. Contact your child's teacher or the Library for password information.
Be aware and involved
You need to know what your child is doing online. Make sure that your home computer is in a well traveled place and that your child uses his or her mobile devices in your presence.
Make sure your child has "unplugged" time
We all know that a reliance on too much "screen time" is not beneficial to children (or adults!). Your child needs time to read, to enjoy active play, to experiment, and to explore away from technology, too!
