Gun Violence
America needs to protect the second amendment!
Help protect the second amendment!
After many homegrown terrorist acts, many Americans think we need to change the second amendment - The right to bear arms. The Constitution even states, "the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed."
Guns don't kill people, people kill people.
Cases of mass violence are often started by severely mentally ill individuals, should not be an opportunity for policymakers to restrict constitutional rights. The average person with a firearm in their household will not go out on a shooting spree. It's just unrealistic. People do things with a motive, and to take it that far, you probably have a mental illness. Statistics say that in localities where right-to-carry laws have been made, the murder rates and other crimes have decreased. Guns are just the mechanism where murder is possible, but the real problem is the person behind the gun.
Frequently Asked Questions
What has worked to reduce gun violence?
Violent crime rates have sharply decreased over the country since the 1990's regardless if the area has tightened their gun laws. There is no obvious answer, but some things like changes in policing strategies or increasing patrols in hot spots seems to work.
How many guns are in the U.S.?
There are about 310 millions guns in the country and about 40& of households have at least one gun in them. The overall number of guns have increased lately from about one per person to almost two guns per person. American also has the highest rate of gun ownership in the world.
Ideas for Reform
Many people have opinions on what they think should happen, including restricting guns for the average person, but I think that instead of restringing guns with laws, we should make sure background checks are made on anyone who buys guns, and make sure that we know who we are dealing with. If someone has been in jail for murder and comes to buy a gun, maybe its not a great idea to sell them one. If not restrict them from buying one, we can make it a little more difficult to get one depending on your past.
