Perseverance Character Trait

PERSEVERANCE is our PAWS-itive character trait for the month of April! Monthly Character traits are defined and students displaying traits are presented with a PAW. Assigned students will collect them from classrooms each morning. PAWS will be announced during lunches on Wednesday. During lunch on Wednesday, students will have an opportunity to display their PAW on the Principal’s 100 Board. When there are 10 in a row on the board, those 10 students spin the prize wheel for individual incentives. Those individual incentives include VIP lunch with 2 friends, Cafeteria Snack Coupon, Pick a Prize Coupon, Gaming Room with 2 friends. At the end of each month, students will also receive the designated Character bead to acknowledge their PAWS-itive Traits.

Second Trimester Student Recognition

On March 21, 2019 MES celebrated positive student achievements at a Second Trimester Student Recognition assembly. 310 students in grades K-6 received recognition for attending school 95% or more of the time and 197 students in grades K-6 received recognition for demonstrating stellar learning behaviors. Both qualities contribute greatly to learning and a positive school environment! Students who were recognized at the assembly had their names put into a drawing and were randomly drawn for prizes like school spirit wear. ear buds, tokens to The Rink in Titusville or the grand prize of a Kindle Fire donated by our friends at Horace Mann Insurance. Congratulations again to Bryce in 2nd grade who was the lucky grand prize winner! Keep up the great work, Maplewood!

Tiger Tickets Tally

The goal of the PBIS is to create an atmosphere of positivity and to foster community relationships between students, staff and administration. Using this framework, staff recognizes and affirms positive student behavior, as opposed to primarily disciplining negative behavior. The idea is to push the positive. The program is based on the understanding that the school will become more positive and the overall culture will grow when teachers and staff take the time to recognize positive student behaviors. To reinforce the positive behavior, staff recognize students demonstrating appropriate behavior with a tiger ticket. Tickets are submitted by the students to a bag in each homeroom and cashed out every week. Grade levels earning one thousand tickets or more earn an extra recess. ROAR not only rewards positive behaviors on an individual and homeroom basis, but it unites a large, diverse building as well. Beyond the hard numbers of outcomes, kids learn best in a positive, safe environment. Pictured are the grade level tiger paws displayed in our main lobby with tiger ticket tally totals for all to see.

What is our PBiS Goal This Year?

Our overall goal during the 2018-2019 school year is to have 80% or more of our kids receive one or fewer minor/major behavior referrals this school year. As of April 1, 2019, 409 out of our 489 students have received one or fewer behavior referrals for discipline. That means that 84% of our students at Maplewood Elementary are consistently doing the right thing! Out of the 80 students that have received more than one referral, only 55 have more than two. Our students are making great choices and learning quickly to avoid repeating bad ones.
