October Newsletter

Letter from Principal Walton

Dear RBK Families,

Wow! It is hard to believe it is October already! I want to take this opportunity to thank you for all your support and hard work that you have provided our students and teachers at Roy B. Kelley. This is definitely an unprecedented year and we are ALL in this together! I am confident that we will persevere through all these new challenges we are facing. Please know that I am here for you and your child. There are a tremendous amount of new regulations and standards that we are held to. I will do my best to accommodate you and your family. Let’s work together and communicate face to face. Our focus at RBK is for your child to grow and experience educational success.

Here are a few key points about how to be a successful learner in the Remote and Hybrid Model:

  • Attend on time in person and remotely.

  • Complete all your assignments in person and remotely.

  • View all videos shared in Google Classroom.

  • New learning and material is shared DAILY.

  • Wednesday is a day of learning.

  • Remote families MUST pick up school work on Wednesday and drop off completed school work 11:00-9:00.

  • Mrs. O’Sheehan and Mrs. Lutz are here for tech support. Many families and caregivers have made an appointment and met with them for assistance. Make an appointment if you need assistance with technology.

  • If you need internet service please contact me.

  • Your child is being graded on their remote assignments and classwork.

  • All children will struggle while learning. It should be a challenge.

  • Allow your child to be independent as possible.

  • Please make sure your child is learning at home and in a quiet environment.

  • Respect others in the Google Meet. They can hear and see others in your household.

  • STAY CONNECTED!!! Watch the Google Classroom for updates and information.

Virtual Halloween Parade

We will conduct a virtual Halloween parade for 2020-2021. This year we will collect photos. Please send your photos electronically to your child’s teacher by Friday, October 23, 2020. Please take a photo of your child in their costume and email it to the teacher. If your child’s costume has a mask or face covering please take two photos so we can decipher who the child is. Due to the state of affairs and the various learning models this will allow all students to participate if they are willing. The PTA has generously donated goodie bags for each student since we are unable to host the annual Fall festival. The blue cohort will receive their goodie bags on Tuesday, October 27. The remote students will pick up their goodie bags on Wednesday, October 28. The gold cohort will receive their goodie bags on Friday, October 30. As always, if you have any questions please contact me.

Remote Learning Tips & Tricks

Find a quiet space to set up! If you don't have a separate room, you can create a temporary office to help your scholar get into the learning zone. Keep tools as tools! Find a safe place for your scholar's learning tools to live! These should be only used as tools, not played with as toys.

Lunch Bunch

Lunch Bunch will be starting on Monday, Oct. 5th. Passes will be handed out to teachers to choose 2-3 students from their classroom to go. Lunch Bunch is for all students. This is a fun way to deepen relationships and to practice social skills.

Farm to School Kids Cook Kit

A sign up sheet will be sent home on Oct. 6th to receive a Kids Cook Kit. There is a limited quantity, so sign up soon. Your kit will include a recipe card and ingredients, plus a link to watch a video to make Three Sister's Soup and Cornbread. The kit will be sent home with your child on Tuesday, October 20th for the Blue Cohort students and on Friday, October 23rd for the Gold Cohort students. Full remote students may pick up their kits at their regular meal pick up location on Wednesday, Oct. 21st.

Virtual After school Program

Leah Brown is the Youth Services Coordinator with the Lockport Salvation Army. They are starting their after school program virtually. They are providing homework help, games, and other programs for children in grades 1 - 8 via google Classroom. The program runs parallel to the district regarding holidays and/or time off from school. They are available Monday through Friday, 4 - 6 p.m. If you are interested, please use this link to sign up:

Partnership in Patriotism

Each year, the Lockport City School District students, staff, and families honor our veterans by paying tribute to them at a Veterans Day Celebration at Outwater Park. This year we will be modifying our celebration to respect current health can safety guidelines. Instead of the Outwater Park gathering, we are asking children and students of all ages (parents too!) to create cards at home thanking our local veterans for their service. Please drop off your cards by October 28th, card drop box locations are:

  • VFW Post - 112 Caledonia St.
  • Navy-Marine Club - 37 Park Avenue
  • Elks Lodge - 6791 N. Canal Rd.
  • Lockport Town Hall - 6560 Dysinger Road

A special thank you to Renee Knight and the Partnership in Patriotism Coalition for their enduring dedication to this program and our veterans. Let's all join in sharing our appreciation for our Lockport Veterans!!
