ENERGY BUS BEDTIME STORY ~ As shared in our recent blog, “A Word from our Superintendent: Giving Thanks,” the Energy Bus hosted a virtual bedtime story, “Thank You and Good Night.” The story is meant to be a way to teach us about the power of being grateful. Enjoy!
GIVING TUESDAY ~ #GivingTuesday, celebrated tomorrow, Tuesday, November 27, is a global day of giving fueled by the power of social media and collaboration. #GivingTuesday kicks off the charitable season when many focus on their holiday and end-of-year giving. One of the best ways to get involved is in your own community, your Compass community! Give today to help us expand and enhance our engagement opportunities!
K-8 SCHOOL NEWS
FOLKTALE UNIT ~ The second and third grade Folktale Unit continues tomorrow, Tuesday, November 27 at 8 am. We will focus on comparing story elements found in folktales and discussing common themes. The Folktale Unit will be held in Ms. Fisher’s Reading Room!
MISS D.’S SUCCESS TIP OF THE WEEK ~ Stick to your daily schedule during the busy holiday season! This time of year, it’s easy to get off track, so make even more of an effort at home to hold your scholar accountable to their daily schedule so they are successful during this busy time! Having trouble holding your scholar accountable to their schedule? Try a rewards system at home! Reward your scholar with an extra break, a pass on a particular chore they dread, or take them to their favorite park after the school day when they complete all of their work and stick to their schedule!

AVID ~ Looking for something to do during the upcoming breaks? Each year AVID Center invites scholars to participate in the AVID Center’s Speaker Contest to share your personal experience with AVID. Winners of this contest will be invited to share your stories at one of the 2019 Summer Institutes as well as earn prizes. We invite all scholars school-wide to participle in this contest whether you are a current AVID Elective Scholar, a past AVID Elective Scholar, or have been impacted by the AVID program in any other way. The deadline to enter is Friday, January 4, 2019.

FINAL WEEK TO SUBMIT UC AND CSU APPLICATIONS ~ Seniors, the application deadlines for the University of California (UC) and California State University (CSU) college systems are almost here! GREAT KINDNESS CHALLENGE ~ We are extremely sad to report that one of our fellow Great Kindness Challenge participating schools, Paradise Elementary, has been destroyed by the Camp Fire in Paradise, California. Help us put together a "Kind Card" for Paradise Elementary School. The Counseling Services Team will be collecting your wishes of love and support for the Paradise community through this form by this Thursday, November 29. The Compass Kind Card will be sent to Kids For Peace, who will hand deliver our card to leaders of the Paradise Unified School District. We are grateful for all of your kind Compass hearts!
SCHOLARSHIP OPPORTUNITIES FOR SCHOLARS IN FRESNO, KERN, MADERA, MERCED, AND TULARE COUNTIES ~ Tri Counties Bank competitively awards scholarships of up to $1,500 each to scholars attending a 4-year college and up to $1,000 for those attending community college. Awards will be made to talented high school seniors who demonstrate a keen interest in public service, community engagement and business entrepreneurship — especially among our economically-disadvantaged youth. Webinar Spotlight ~ Close Reading the Internet: Developing Critical Thinkers: How do we teach scholars to be critical thinkers online? Strategies will be presented for teaching scholars to be effective researchers and critical consumers of online media this Thursday, November 29 at 1 pm.
