Orana Catholic Primary School
Term 3, Week 10, 2021.
Let Us Pray
We thank you Lord, for this term.
For our challenges, our successes, and the mistakes from which we have learnt.
Be with us as we spend our time with family and friends.
Give us strength and courage to do what is right: to be witnesses of our faith.
Help us to be a practical Christian these holidays, to appreciate what others do for us, to give time and effort to help others.
To be peacemakers in our family.
Keep us safe in our activities; give us good rest and good fun.
Bring us back refreshed and ready for a new term.
We thank you for our classmates, teachers, parents, carers and a community that cares for us. May we always be conscious of you in our lives.
Dear Parents and Carers,
Thank you to students and their families for attending Mass over the weekend to celebrate the students who received the Sacrament of Confirmation at our parish. The students received their certificates and celebrated with a lovely cake.
Yesterday, we held our Athletics Carnival. This is a well organised event which enables the students to come together, to try their best and work cooperatively as a house. It is an opportunity for students to demonstrate some of the skills they have learned at Physical Education lessons, to try and beat their previous personal best and to encourage and support their team mates. It is also a great way for our students to demonstrate our Gospel Values of Generosity, Respect and Excellence, through their community spirit, teamwork and sportsmanship. A parent commented to me that students were seen encouraging each other and showing great sportsmanship; hearing this fills me with pride on behalf of the families represented. The carnival requires much work in the background and we are thankful to Miss Dennett for the many hours that go into this event and to Mr Hadley and Mr Edwards for ensuring the grounds were ready and the set up for the day was in order. We would also like to thank the many parents/carers, grandparents and family members who attend to make this a great community event that is enjoyed by all. Thank you in particularly to parents/carers and staff for assisting to set up on the day, volunteering for roles during the day and for assisting to pack up at the end.
As we come close to the end of Term 3, we look forward to a well-deserved break. Holidays are an exciting time to spend as a family and provide excellent opportunity to develop family relationships, learn new things and to apply what is learned at school in a new context. Whilst these holiday experiences are priceless, it is important to attempt to limit holidays to during the actual school holiday period as withdrawing students from school for significant periods of time can be detrimental to their learning. It can also imply that schooling isn’t important and gives the opportunity for the child to assume that learning is something that they can opt in and out of. In regard to attendance, if a child is away for two weeks in a usual ten week term their attendance for that term is only 80%. If this is repeated regularly, throughout their schooling, learning can be impacted significantly. If a child missing school is unavoidable, it is essential that clear communication with the classroom teacher ensures continuity in learning.
We look ahead to next term with anticipation. Next term, students will be required to wear summer uniform. We will also be trialling wearing sports uniform three days a week. Running shoes must be blue or white on sports day. Students must have a hat as we promote sun safety. Please start the term setting a high expectation for uniform presentation. Staff will be following up on uniform standards including shoes, hair, uniforms and accessories so please be consistent in your expectations around uniforms.
The construction of the P and F funded automated gate will be commence during the holidays. The main gate near the office will be replaced by an automated gate to improve student safety. Civil and ground works will commence during the holidays and installation will occur during Week 1. Consequently, this gate and the carpark near the administration building will not be in use during Week 1. Once installed, the gate will be open until 9.30 and after 2.30. If you attend school during the day you will need to use the system to connect to the office and gain access to the carpark. Entry to the school will be through the middle gate on Querrin Avenue. Please allow a few more minutes when collecting students for appointments during the day, particularly during construction and while we fine tune the new system. Thank-you so much to the P and F for their support of this initiative.
Please see the Term 4 Planner on the website. This is a forward planner and is subject to change. Please regularly refer the the Dates to Remember section below and the website. https://www.orana.wa.edu.au/calendar/

God bless and take care.
Well done Orana Catholic Primary School Community for turning out in such great numbers for our annual Faction Athletics Carnival. All students from Kindy to Year Six represented their faction in various running races, games and relays. We were blessed with beautiful weather and our students were wonderful sports people, cheering their faction and competitors on. Our students demonstrated our school values of Generosity, Respect and Excellence. A special thank you to all the parents, staff and students who attended the event and assisted in the organisation of the day. Without your fantastic support, the day would not have run so smoothly. Students who qualify for the CAPSS Inter School Athletics Carnival will represent Orana at Len Shearer Reserve on Tuesday, 2nd November.

Our Leadership Groups - Sports
The Year 6 Sport’s Leadership team are leaders who assist with the organisation of sports carnivals, equipment and building positive team spirits, attitudes and efforts.
The Year 6 students encourage and model good sportsmanship during recess, lunch and carnivals and have organised and coordinated an equipment system to ensure all year levels are being responsible and accountable for their classroom equipment.
During lunch time, the Year 6’s run a pumping station for all students to bring along any equipment that needs to be pumped up and pop down to the Early Years Centre to ensure their equipment is in a good working condition.

SOCIAL WORKER NEWS
The Benefits of Boredom
‘Children need to sit in their own boredom for the world to become quiet enough that they can hear themselves’ – Dr Vanessa Lapointe
With the school holidays upon us, many parents will be frantically trying to find new ways to fend off boredom for their kids.
And thinking of new and exciting activities to do is always going to be a good thing…
Organised activities involving sports, music or education have proven to be beneficial to a child’s physical, cognitive, cultural and social development.
We would like to thank families who have made a Vacation Care booking. We are now FULLY BOOKED for October Vacation Care. Your support is greatly appreciated.
