Geography Bee
Students in 4th and 5th grades are invited to participate in our National Geographic "Geography Bee." This is an opportunity for your child to learn more about the
world around them! By clicking on the link provided below, your child will have all of the study materials that they need. Your child will study individually from now until January 25th! That is a lot of time to prepare! Should your child be the champion at Mathews (there must be at least 6 participants at Mathews before any student can advance), your child will then take an Online Qualification Test. This test can be given to only one student. GeoBee will advise us if the champion qualifies for the State GeoBee on March 29, 2019.
We hope you will encourage your child to participate in this challenge. If you need additional information, please do not hesitate to contact your child's teacher.
In January we will ask for the names of all those students who have been preparing so that they can participate in the School GeoBee. Happy studying!

Math Update
Here is what is planned in math for the next two weeks:
December 3-7: Topic 8 (Adding and Subtracting Mixed Numbers)
12/13 - Topic 8 Test
December 10 -14 :Topic 9 (Will start working on Multiplying and Dividing Fractions)
*******************************************************
All 5th graders should complete 30 minutes of Dreambox outside of school each week.
SCIENCE
In Science, the first week of December will be spent designing a simple Rube Goldberg machine and our Unit Assessment over Force Motion and Energy (Dec 5th). We will then launch our unit on Earth’s Surface! Plenty of hands-on to learn about the formation of earth’s landforms prior to Winter Break.
Please have your child share their science notebook with you at least once a week so that you can ask them questions about their science lessons. Students can also access the explorations and reading passages we use in class by going on webdesk.pisd.edu and clicking on the Discovery Education Plano app. This app provides a great way to review material that is covered in class.
SOCIAL STUDIES
Our study of United States history is moving to students' understanding of the cultures that developed in the New England, Middle, and Southern colonies (that eventually were known as the first 13 states of the United States). We will learn about the struggle experienced between the 13 colonies and England prior to, during, and after the American Revolution. Afterward, we will study the United States Constitution. Please continue to have your child share with you what they are learning in social studies class.
READING
Students will continue to read their novels until we leave for the winter vacation. It is always a joy to listen to these students discuss what they have read during the book clubs each Friday. Be sure your child is completing the reading and the questions each week.
If you feel your child is in need of additional reading practice, please encourage him/her to log into freckle.com. This site has reading skills practice along with articles and questions. There is also spelling practice and math. It continues to be crucial that your child continue to read daily to help build fluency, comprehension, vocabulary, and reading stamina.
Students will work on ' Making Inferences', and use textual evidence to support understanding.
Strategy used in class:
Text Evidence + Background knowledge = Making Inferences ( Drawing Conclusions)
