WHPE Update July 2020
"Better Together"
Greetings,
I hope this message finds you and your family happy, healthy, safe, and enjoying the summer time away from school. As we start to hear what are back to school guidelines will be, please remember that WHPE is ready to support you in any way you need. There are 2 Big Questions that WHPE is focusing on:
WHAT DO YOU NEED?
WHAT CAN WE DO TO HELP YOU and YOUR STUDENTS?
Please expect and fill out a survey at the end of July to help us identify how we help get you the resources you need and/or attend a zoom on July 28th for a sharing and listening session.
These are things we are working on now:
- Provide online teaching resources for your specific situation on our webpage, via zoom, via newsletters, etc.
- Provide opportunities for meeting with other WHPE members via zoom to brainstorm and share ideas/concerns with each other. These zooms will be organized both by district and by grade level subject areas. We will be working on a consistent zoom schedule so you can plan ahead restructuring.
- Provide virtual professional development.
- Move up our WHPE grant deadlines so you can submit and receive resources earlier in the school year. We have a zoom dedicated to helping you put together your grant proposals.
- Create a position dedicated to the promotion of Health Education on our board of directors.
- Design a support system to assist WHPE members who are seeking their National Board Certification.
Convention News. WHPE is postponing our convention until the end of March. We are still working out the details. We hope to have a clearer picture and something decided early December as to whether we can hold it in person at the Wilderness or if it will need to be virtual. We will be asking for new presentation proposals once we figure out the format for our spring convention.
Throughout it all, please remember We are BETTER TOGETHER and WHPE is here to serve you. Don't hesitate to reach out with new ideas, needs, or concerns.
Warm Regards,
Maureen Vorwald, WHPE President

Preparing for the Fall
From our ED, Penny Kroening...
Educate on Wisconsin's and your own district reentry plans
1) WI DPI put out the Education Forward document. The document leaves the area of health and physical education in the shadow. Help your administration by providing them with a copy of SHAPE America's School Reentry Considerations for Health, Physical Education, and Physical Activity to help brighten the pathway.
2) Teaching Strategies workbook is a companion document to SHAPE America’s 2020-2021 School Reentry Considerations. It is a publication that is intended to guide administrators, staff, and teachers as they prepare an environment for safe and supportive instruction in physical education, health education, and physical activity. Use the workbook to explore teaching strategies for health and physical education related to Equity, Inclusion and Accessibility, Social and Emotional Learning, Trauma-Sensitive Learning Environment, and Student Assessment.
3) A companion At-Home Student Survey will help you as an educator consider questions to collect data. Find out what your student's needs are as well as how to develop strategies to best reach your students.
4) Wisconsin Physical Education Academic Standards have recently been revised and approved by State Superintendent Carolyn Stanford Taylor. Standard 4 & 5 are directly related to Social and Emotional Learning and referenced directly to the Wisconsin social-emotional learning competencies.
Attention National Board Candidates
Participate in Online Backyard Advocacy Day on July 16
On Thursday, July 16, we hope you'll join the HPE community by flooding social media with advocacy messages and sending a letter to your superintendent and school board.
Reaching out to these stakeholders is essential right now as they will drive the majority of school reentry decisions related to budgets, teaching positions, and priorities. This is our opportunity to come together around a unified message to ensure that health and physical education stays at the forefront of school reentry planning!
3 Ways to Support Health and PE Right Now
- Get educated on your state/district reentry plans — Check out SHAPE America's School Reentry Considerations for Health, Physical Education and Physical Activity along with other resources to help you plan for back to school.
- Email a letter to your superintendent and school board — Letter writing is one of the most successful advocacy tools you have! We have crafted an example for you to use or edit to fit your needs!
- Advocate on social media — Tag members of your school board, your superintendent, state leaders and more to share your message. Be sure to use the hashtag #SHAPEAdvocacy. We have messages on our website to help you get started!

Congratulations Mary Wentland!!
A Minocqua teacher has been awarded the Sanford Teacher Award for Wisconsin. Mary Wentland, a Physical Education, Adaptive Physical Education and Health teacher at Lakeland Union High School in Minocqua, has been named a recipient of the National University System – Sanford Teacher Award for Wisconsin. The Sanford Teacher Award honors the top teacher in each state and the District of Columbia with $10,000 for supporting student development and achievement. Wentland was told about it during a surprise Zoom announcement Wednesday. During a video chat after the announcement, Wentland says she wanted to teach students about life..."Curriculum doesn't live on a shelf or book, it's live. That was the biggest thing where I said, 'hey, I need help with people navigate some skills that were going to get them through these times that we're going through. I might have had a set curriculum where my school said here is the scope and sequence. What I learned is scope and sequence can wait, life happens right now and we're going to teach life..."The award was established in the name of philanthropist T. Denny Sanford, who is committed to supporting inspiring teaching nationwide through programs focused on developing the social and emotional skills of young people. Each teacher recipient is now eligible to be named the national winner of the Sanford Teacher Award, which comes with an award of $50,000 and will be announced later.
