CCUSD COVID UPDATE - FALL 2022
We hope you have had a wonderful and relaxing summer. As we prepare to return to school this week (Thursday, August 18), below is updated information regarding our continuing COVID-19 protocols.
Return to School COVID-19 Testing
We are asking all students to take an at-home rapid COVID-19 viral test before returning to school. Middle School and High School students were given tests during the onsite registration process. Elementary students can pick up tests from their school site next week. We are asking parents to send students to school only if their test results are negative. If the test results are positive please keep your students at home and immediately contact your school health staff for further instruction.
Weekly COVID-19 Testing
Weekly testing of staff and students at the school sites will resume the week of August 22. The schedule for elementary schools has been modified to allow for more testing staff to support each school - see below. LFN is still the testing provider, but they are switching our users to an online portal for retrieving test results. (They will also continue notifications via text and email.) Anyone who was registered last year will receive an emailed letter from LFN referencing the steps needed to make this switch. If you have not previously registered, that information is also included here as an attachment.
- Insurance: To reiterate last year’s message, you will never be billed or charged for these tests. LFN bills your insurance (if applicable) and then works to collect any unpaid amount from the Federal Grant. You may receive “explanation of benefits” from your insurance stating that you have a portion to pay but you will not actually be billed by LFN and can ignore those.
- Blue Shield/Blue Cross have been sending checks for unpaid balances to some people. If you receive them, please hold them until you hear from LFN. Again, you will not be billed for anything.
- Schedule:
- Tuesday: Farragut/OCD, HS and MS
- Wednesday: El Marino and La Ballona
- Thursday: Lin Howe and El Rincon
Weekend Testing
The drive-thru testing on Saturdays in the Elenda complex parking lot has been ongoing and will continue. This weekend test requires one-time registration and weekly selection of “order a test” in the system.
Masks
In accordance with the LACDPH recommendations (COVID-19 Mask Wearing Rules and Recommendations), masks are still strongly recommended indoors. We will continue to provide medical-grade masks (KF94/KN95/N95) to our school sites for distribution to staff, students and parents/volunteers/visitors.
Thank you for your continued cooperation in keeping our staff and students safe into another exciting school year.

ABOUT THE PTA PRESIDENT
I am Zoila Moreira-Angel and I have 3 kiddos. My middle kiddo is starting 1st and oldest is starting 4th grade in the Spanish Immersion Program. I am so excited to help our El Marino Community as PTA President. El Marino is so lucky to have an awesome group for our Executive Board and Committee Chairs. I am appreciative for all their help and skills. This will be a great year because of all the support from our families!
I wanted to share a little about myself and my family. My husband and I are both bilingual and biliterate in Spanish and English. I consider myself Californian-Nicaraguan as I was born and raised in Southern California by my Nicaraguan family who immigrated to the U.S. during the Nicaraguan Revolution. I am so grateful that I can pass on my cultural heritage to my kiddos by songs and foods my grandma used to share with me throughout my life as well as the Spanish language. Knowing different languages does open different viewpoints and it’s fantastic that we have families seeing the value of retaining their heritage language or acquiring a new language to open a window into a different perspective.

GREEN COMMITTEE: PLEDGE TO CLEAN AIR
Let's get the new year started off right and commit to not idling our cars during drop-off and pick-up.
The 405 is the busiest freeway in America, let's do everything we can to limit air pollution at our school.
Check your email, text your coworker, set your map THEN turn on your car and away you go!
Our Green Committee works with parents and students on Clean Air, Reducing Waste, Going Plastic-Free and Respecting our Environment.
The average El Marino student will live to see the year 2100! Let's prepare them for a sustainable life-style.

JAPANESE CULTURAL HERITAGE CLUB (JCHC)
The Japanese Cultural Heritage Club (JCHC) is comprised of parent volunteers of El Marino Language School. JCHC was founded on the mission of educating El Marino and its surrounding community about Japanese culture, traditions, and arts. Pre-COVID, JCHC held its annual Japanese traditions workshop through a grant from the Aratani Foundation and helped with undokai (sports day), mochizuki (mochi making) and other events. Additionally, JCHC holds various Japanese arts workshops and social events for both students and parents.
We'd like to continue sharing the Japanese culture to El Marino and its community and we are seeking parent members!
All parents - SIP and JIP programs - are welcome to join.
If you'd like more information, please email emjapanworkshop@gmail.com

El MARINO GREEN GARDEN IS SEEKING VOLUNTEERS!
Do you have a green thumb?
Do you have a different colored thumb that you wish were greener?
Do you care about nutrition, love vegetables, love composting, love rolling around in the dirt or just love helping out on campus?
THE GARDEN IS A WONDERFUL WAY TO BE INVOLVED IN THE
EL MARINO COMMUNITY!
We plant, maintain and harvest our 7-bed organic garden alongside the entire student body. We host lessons and tastings that require a 9am-12pm commitment once a month. We also love volunteers who can weed and plant before or after school hours. Plus, we do a big clean up and prep twice a year on weekends as well. So, volunteering with us works for all kinds of schedules.
Come when you can! The garden is entirely parent run and we need you!l.
To volunteer, please email doriendavies@gmail.com.
We can’t wait to show you what we grow this year!
