OGS Mid-Year Report

We kicked off the year on August 15 with our annual Meet the Stars Night. Almost 75 percent of our families made it to OGS that night to meet their teachers and drop off their supplies. The year began with over 500 students enrolled with second grade and sixth grade being our biggest sections. Our theme for the year is Avengers.

Our school call-back is, "Avengers, assemble!" We filmed our annual back to school music video for our back to school assembly. This is something the students look forward to every year.

We were also able to add a third section of Preschool For All. This means that we can now potentially serve 20 more students ages 3-5. Miss Cross picked up this section. She now teaches Early Childhood in the morning and Preschool For All in the afternoon. She even received a brand new calming designed classroom through grant money!

Other August/September activities: Youth Mental Health training for staff PTO Cash Bash, PTO movie night, girls' basketball, Project Success, MAPS assessment.

During the month of October we invited families to come have lunch with their students. This is one of our yearly traditions. Families bring lunch to their student and we enjoy lunch on the east lawn followed by recess. We will do this fun activity again in the spring!

On October 25 we held our annual Halloween dance. This dance is organized solely by sixth grade students. All the snacks and decorations were donated and Mr. Dunavan donated his time to DJ the dance. We also use it as an opportunity to give back to the community. Students donated over 150 items for the Oakwood Food Pantry!

Other October activities: Fire Safety House, Halloween parade and parties, boys' basketball, staff participating in peer observations, sliming Mr. Glosser at our first quarter positive behavior assembly.

On November 13 we celebrated Sandy Jagroop at the VASE Evening of Excellence for her dedication to OGS special education. Currently Miss Sandy is a teaching assistant in our 4-6 special education classroom. Miss Sandy goes above and beyond in educating and caring for her students!

Mrs. Dudley created a bulletin board to show off STAR student work. Students from all grade levels are featured for submitting excellent work!

During November we also held our fall book fair in conjunction with Grandparents' breakfast. Each grade level was invited to bring their grandparents in for breakfast followed by shopping at the book fair.

Other November activities: Family Reading Night, Read Across America, planning for writing curriculum, start of boys' basketball, Harlem Wizards performance.

December brought a lot of excitement! Mrs. Farris directed two amazing Christmas programs. Our K-2 program, Elflandia, and our 3-6 program, Holiday Road-trip.

Our wonderful PTO organized a Santa Shop for students to shop at and buy presents for family members. We also had an area where students could get free gifts if they didn't have any money. The PTO also had Santa and Mrs. Claus visit OGS. Each student was given a picture with Santa and a book.

Congratulations to the following teachers for receiving a grant from OCEF:

Nicole Johnson and Jennifer Rupp- QBall microphones

Dawn Brown- Math Stackers

Other December activities: kindergarten gingerbread unit, staff Promethian Board training, second quarter positive behavior assembly, staff runaway Santa activity, teachers observing Courtney Hemker and Nichole Jones teach writing.

Through the kindness of community members we were able to pay off all past due lunch balances that accumulated over the first semester. We are always blown away by the kindness of our community!

Thank you to Carol Moore for coming up with a hashtag for OGS!
