FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL REMINDERS
Yard Duty
Last Minute Stuff
Before School
If you have before school yard duty, feel free to stop by the office and pick up some bracelets to hand out to students. If you don't have yard duty, but are able to be present before the start of the school day, it helps to have extra people pointing parents in the right direction.Bracelets
A handful of extra bracelets were place in each of your boxes. Please share these with any students who did not receive one from the staff before school. Send any extras to the office.
Class List Changes
We have had an unbelievable number of last minute registrations and students who have moved away. Although Vicki printed up the most current list before leaving at 5:00, there is a good chance that the names may change. If you have any concerns, questions, or students who do appear on your paper lists, please check PowerSchool first. If there is still a problem, contact the office. Remember to be patient with the phone, as it can be extremely busy in the office on the first day of school.
Recess
Please take a few moments to talk with your students about playground expectations before recess. The rules are simpler, but we really have the same expectations.
Lunch
Before recess tomorrow (hopefully sooner), we will attach papers with your names to the tables in the lunch area. Please take a trip down to that area to show your students where they should be sitting at lunch. Unfortunately, the carts have not yet arrived. Although there is hope that they will arrive in the morning, intermediate teachers may need to be flexible about lunch bags. At 12:30, the yard duty supervisors on the intermediate side will blow whistles on the playground and field to let students know that it is time to come in for lunch. I will be out there to organize them into grade level groups on the playground. If we don't have the carts, I will release them by classroom to get their lunches and head to their tables. Hopefully, this will become a quick process over time and we'll be able to allow a few extra minutes of play time before eating. At 12:50, lunch is over for everyone. Primary teachers will meet their students at their classrooms and intermediate teachers will meet their students at their tables.
Popsicles
Since it is expected to be a hot day, Student Council is providing popsicles to everyone at lunch time. After about ten minutes of eating, the students will distribute the treats to the tables.
TEAM ALTA VISTA DANCE TEAM
Don't forget - we will be recording the dance on Wednesday, August 21st. More details to come at the end of the week.
Many thanks to Mikayla, Christy, Soraya, and Michelle for making this happen!!
REMINDER - ALTA VISTA SMART START ACTIVITIES
- PAWS Project - In your boxes, you will find a set of paw prints. Using your grade level "color" from last year (check the art in the Media Center if you've forgotten), have each student decorate a paw print. If possible, also have them write their names on the front, but it will have to be small. We will be creating a bulletin board in the office with everyone's paw print.
- Seesaw Videos - Have each child in your class create a Seesaw video, stating their first and last name, plus some other bit of information. This can be favorite color, summer memory, or anything else. The goal of this video is to have a recording of every student saying his/her name. This will be an important resource when we are announcing student recognition "winners" or when you are getting ready to meet with a parent. It will allow us to respect each and every child by pronouncing his/her name correctly. Please alphabetize the videos by last name and share with Cathy (co-teacher). If you need help with Seesaw, reach out to Christy or others on your team.
- Team Alta Vista Dance - On August 21st, District Office personnel will be here after lunch to record the entire school dancing a simple version of the cupid shuffle to "Celebration" by Kool & the Gang. We will even have the district drone taking overhead video. How will this happen? Use this video to help your students learn the dance. Many of your students already know this popular dance, so make them your leaders. This will give us a shared activity that we can use throughout the year (Walk-a-thon, Olympic Day, etc.). Stressful - hopefully not. Fun - definitely.
- Family Picnic - On Friday, the entire school will have lunch from 12:00 to 12:50. Families have been invited to join their children on the field for this community event. Information was shared with families in the Vista Views newsletter. To help things run smoothly, we'll share more details with you later in the week (once you've had a chance to catch your breath).
- Classroom Visits - Similar to last year, Cathy will be visiting each classroom. This year's focus will be PAWS, Cougar Pride, and general rules. Please sign up for a time on the Google doc.
- L&I Resource List - Looking for something to do during these first three days? Check out L&I's Smart Start guide.
