In the midst of busy lives, it is sometimes hard to carve out time to talk with your child(ren) about their day. Not to mention, often the answer to ‘How was your day?’ is a one-word, ‘fine.’ A few weeks ago, I came across a great blog entry by Leslie Means that included 50 questions (other than how was your day) to ask your child about their school day – especially on those days when they don’t want to talk. Below are just a few of the questions – the list will be added to the Brookdale website in its entirety. Hopefully these questions will be the beginning of a great discussion between you and your child!

What made you smile today? What’s the word of the week?

What did you do that was creative? What made you laugh?

Who inspired you today? What is something that challenged you?

What are you reading? Teach me something I don’t know.

What made you feel happy? What made your teacher smile?

If you switched places with your teacher tomorrow, what would you teach the class?

We are so excited to welcome volunteers back into the school! You have been missed these past couple of years.

Just a quick Shout Out to the volunteers that have started back with us! It is great to have you!

Where would Brookdale be, were it not for the AMAZING work of Cindy Yant, office manager and Julia Sylstad, office and library assistant? Mrs. Yant and Ms. Sylstad are on the front lines making sure that students, parents, and staff have everything they need on a daily basis. Their sunny dispositions and helpful nature contribute to a welcoming school-environment. Whether it's organizing the BOBCAT Pride Assemblies, publishing the newsletter, ordering supplies, tracking attendance, helping new families with registration, or providing some extra TLC for a student in need, Mrs. Yant and Ms. Sylstad are second to none!

Office Update

We have exciting news regarding our office!!!

After more than 27 years in our district, with the last 20 years at Brookdale, Mrs. Yant is retiring at the end of the school year. We will miss her, but are excited about her getting to enjoy the next stage of her life with her husband and family.

The front office will be in the capable hands of Ms. Julia Sylstad. She has been promoted to Office manager so there will still be a familiar face in our front office. Brookdale is very lucky to have her!

Please join us in congratulating both of them on their new adventures!

Congratulations to our March Madness 4-Square Tournament Winners: Jelanie Smalls and Zane Guilliot!!

Registration for new kindergarten through grade 5 students who live within our school boundaries has opened. A child must be five years of age on or before August 31, 2022 to be eligible to enroll. Please prepare to register by obtaining medically verified immunization records, birth certificate, and a proof of residence (utility bill, lease/rental agreement, or mortgage papers). We register new students online at our district website ~ Franklin Pierce Schools. Please click here to start the process.

Current students who live within Brookdale Elementary boundaries are automatically enrolled at Brookdale Elementary for the 22/23 school year.

  • Students who were overloaded to Brookdale for the 21-22 school year will return to their home schools for 2022-23.
  • Students living within our district but outside of Brookdale boundaries who want to attend Brookdale must complete a within-district transfer form online. Click on the Transfers and Homeschool link to access the correct form.
  • Out-of-district students who wish to attend Brookdale must complete a new out-of-district transfer (Choice Transfer) from their home district to be considered for enrollment.

Any questions, please contact our school office at 253.298.3100.

Testing will start next week and will run through the end of May. Please make sure your 3rd, 4th, and/or 5th grader is at school on time on their assigned testing days and that they have gotten plenty of rest. Be sure to avoid scheduling appointments on testing days. Please find below the testing days per grade.

  • Third Grade ~ May 3, 5, 6, 17, 19 and 20
  • Fourth Grade ~ April 26, 28 and 29 - May 10, 12 and 13
  • Fifth Grade ~ May 3, 5, 6, 17, 18, 19 and 20
  • All makeups will be done on May 31.

STUDENT EARLY DISMISSAL – If your child has an appointment and is leaving before the end of the school day, please make sure you send a note that morning letting the teacher and the office know. If you call, we must receive it before 3:00 and students should be picked up no later than 3:30 due to our end of the day congestion. Also, please allow enough time for pick up. To preserve precious class time, we do not call students to the office until you have checked them out in person (remember your ID).

SCHEDULE CHANGES - The end of the day at Brookdale is very hectic. If you forgot to send a note in the morning (which is preferred) and need to call the school with a change to your child’s schedule, please do so before 3:00 p.m. After 3:00 the office is busy assisting students and parents and will not be able to answer your call or get a message to a student before they leave for the day. All end of the day schedule changes must be made through the office, not with the classroom teacher. Thank you!

UPDATE CONTACT INFORMATION - If any of your information has changed (address, contact info., email address, etc.) please contact the office right away. This year more than ever, it will be important to have the most current information. Also, let us know what your preferred method of contact is - phone, email, text. You can reach the office at 253.298.3100.
