Honeybees

The Life of a Queen Bee

Key Vocabulary

The Job of the Queen Bee

The queen bee is the mom of all of the bees in the hive because she is the only bee who can have babies. When the queen is not having babies, she is in charge of the hive and makes special chemicals to guide the other bee's behavior.

How we get honey

It is the worker bees who make the honey for us to eat and enjoy. The worker bees go to flowers and collect the nectar. Then they bring the nectar back to the hive where other worker bees spread it out over the honeycomb (the hive) to get the water out of it. Once it is thick, the bees store it until it is ready to be eaten.
