This Wednesday's Parent Presentation: Understanding Conflict at School

On the evening of Wednesday, January 22, we'll offer a parent information night focused on understanding peer conflicts at school. Staff will share our school's language for conflict, describe types of bullying and common conflicts at various ages, and discuss how we can work together to support students. Please RSVP to Tina in the school office and join us in the MPR at 6:00 PM.

Safety for All Students

Please be aware as you come to and from school. Watch for our students as you drive to and from school as many will be using crosswalks. We strongly encourage you to park around the perimeter and walk in to campus, when you are able. To drop-off or pick-up without leaving your vehicle, pull along the white curbs on Harvard or 8th Street. Never stop along a red curb or leave your car while parked in the white zone. Most importantly, teach your child to use crosswalks; never ask them to enter the street to get into the car. If waiting with a dog at pick-up, please wait away from high traffic areas in front of the school.

School Attendance

Being at school each day is very important. Students are welcome at school with a cold but should stay home if they've had fever or vomiting/diarrhea in the past 24 hours. If your child is ill, please email Norma at or leave a message on the Attendance Line at 398-0325. If your student has an appointment, please make arrangements to have them attend part of the day.

Big picture

More about this presentation...

Join us for a presentation led by Farzana Nayani, who will discuss how to interact with our children about race at home, at school, and in the community. Bring your questions and examples so we can talk through how to overcome potential challenges and move into these conversations and moments with more ease. Farzana Nayani has been a national speaker on diversity and inclusion for over 20 years. She has worked with schools, public agencies, and non-profit organizations as a consultant and trainer on inclusivity, intercultural communication, and unconscious bias. She helped develop a number of school-wide initiatives to foster learning and conversations around inclusive practices at schools. In addition to her work as a trainer, Farzana is a parent and former teacher, as well as author of a book entitled "Being All of Me: A Handbook for Teachers and Parents of Multiracial, Multiethnic, and Transracially Adopted Children." She has been featured in LA Parent Magazine and on NPR on raising children in a conscious and inclusive way. For more info:

The Talent Show is Coming Up!

Sycamore's Annual Talent Show is coming up on the afternoon of Sunday, February 23. This event allows students to share their talents with an audience of friends and family. All participants need to complete a permission slip and present their <3 minute act in an “audition”during the week of February 18 to ensure their performance is well-planned and appropriate for our young audience. There will be no dinner this year. Still, the ticket price will go directly to fundraise for Outdoor Science School. The permission slip with more information will be coming soon!
