Media Monthly
for middle school families!
Hi Parents!
Happy Holidays from the Edgewood Library Media Center! I'm not getting around to writing this newsletter as often as I'd like, but I thought I should send out a quick one with some Winter Break reading suggestions and maybe even some last-minute gift ideas! So...look below for some of the books that are most popular in our library!
Wonder is such an amazing book. I think all people middle-school aged and older should read it. Auggie is a boy, born with physical deformities, who's been home schooled. Until now. This book is written from three different perspectives - Auggie's, his sister's and his sister's boyfriend. It's heart-warming and maddening all at once and you won't the same after reading it.
The Emerald Atlas is the first in a trilogy - of course! Aren't all popular books these days part of a trilogy?! It is also one of the Maud Hart Lovelace nominees for this year. If you don't know what that is - its a book award that's unique because STUDENTS get to vote on which book should win. We'll be having a voting party in March and anyone who's read at least 3 of the nominees gets to attend and make their voice heard!
Its a fun book in the mystery/fantasy genre. Three small siblings are taken from the families at a young age, pushed through various orphanages before they find out that they are really quite special - they are the "chosen ones" who will "save the world". :) Good story with lots of adventure and some family love!

Okay for Now is another Maud Heart Lovelace nominee. So far, this one is my favorite. When I read the back of the book, I wasn't too sure...but by the end of the book, I knew this would be one that I suggested to students over and over again. The back of the book basically says that the story is about a boy who moves to a new town, hates it, but then finds relief in a library. Ugh. Right? But, if you give it a try you'll find that Doug, the main character, is very easy to relate to, the writing style and author voice is engaging and quite sarcastic and you end up cheering for him throughout the story. I loved it. Your student will too.
The Running Dream is yet another title that can be voted on in the spring (notice a trend yet!?). Its about a girl who is passionate about running, but loses her leg after a car accident. You'll work through her pain and grief and resurrection in this wonderful story. Great read to snuggle up with under a blanket while the snow is coming down!
Allegiant is the final in Veronica Roth's trilogy. I'll be honest that I haven't had a chance to read it yet, but I'm gonna say its super good because we cannot keep any copies of it on the shelf and it is the title with the most "holds" on it. If your kid has read the first two, its a sure bet they'd like to read this last one!
The Skeleton Creek series is a lot of fun. Here's why: Periodically when you're reading, you'll get to a page where there is a website and a password. So, you get to pause your reading and go watch a video online that is supposed to support the story and help you figure out the clues to the mystery. Super cool for our kids, right!? Well, I think so. The stories are fun (and some students say "super scary!"), but if your kids like a suspenseful mystery, this one is worth a read!
We NEED you.
We really do.
We're looking for parent and community volunteers who might be willing to give an hour of their time once a week...once a month...once. We have book shelving that always needs to get done, but we also have "special projects" that need some love...like a big box of books that need to be covered. We offer on-the-job training, lots of gratitude and a chance to see what your middle schoolers are up to and reading. We also offer chocolate. :) Give us a shout out if you're interested in any amount of helping out! We'll find something for you to do! (Contact information below)
