Calling All Crayons!
PLEASE DONATE YOUR OLD AND USED CRAYONS!
Northland Pines School District is participating in the Crayon Initiative!
The Crayon Initiative is a non-profit organization that collects old crayons and re-manufactures them into new crayons. These new Crayons are donated to Children's hospitals around the United States. Not only does this keep non-biodegradable wax out of landfills, it repurposes them for a wonderful cause.
All shipping costs will be paid for by the Recycling Club and other school programs.
What You Can Do Now:
Please collect any old crayons and bring them to your teacher or drop them off in the boxes at the front office.
The crayons DO NOT have to be organized, sorted, peeled or changed in any way. All crayons can be donated!
Collection Dates:
Friday, May 13th
Friday, May 20th
Last Collection Day: Thursday, May 26th
Thank you for supporting this wonderful cause and brightening a child's day!

Wonders
This week our class will be focusing on trading. W will discuss how giving things to receive other things is one way to get the things we need.
Here are some activities that you can do with your child to help reinforce the skills we’ll be practicing.
Word Workout
- Words to Know: root words You and your child will try to see how many words you can use in one sentence. You can do this until you can’t think of any more ways to use the words.
- Spelling/Phonics: compound words You will help your child spell the two smaller words that make up each bigger word on the list. See how many words your child spells correctly.
Let's try to see how many of the words in this list we can use in the same sentence. We'll just keep going until we run out of words!
admit
considered
humble
payment
creation
magnificent
reluctantly
barter
I'm going to say each word from this list. I want you to tell me the two smaller words that make up the word. Then I want you to spell them to make the bigger word. Let's see how many you get right!
airplane
daylight
birdhouse
sometime
sidewalks
daytime
hairdo
barefoot
someone
basketball
birthday
somebody
headlight
newspaper
stagecoach
Comprehension: point of view
You will read about two boys who make a trade. Their trade doesn’t work out the way they thought it would. You will help your child identify each character’s point of view.
Envisions Math
We took our Topic 10 test and jumped right into Topic 11: Two - Dimensional Shapes and Their Attributes. Your child will be learning about geometry and the shapes found around us. He or she is learning about lines, angles, and polygons. Your child will learn how to describe triangles and quadrilaterals based on their angles and sides.
Here is an activity that you can do at home that will extend your child's knowledge of two-dimensional shapes.
Map It Out!
Materials: map or atlas
Maps can be a great tool to reinforce geometric vocabulary and understanding. Using a map of your community, city, or state, help your child locate points, lines, angles, and shapes. Look at roads, intersections, city and county boundaries, railroads, and so on.
Challenge your child to find examples of parallel or intersecting lines, acute angles, or different kinds of polygons such as those pictured below.
