Summit School Newsletter
INNOVATIVE TEACHING. EXPERT EDUCATORS. THRIVING STUDENTS.
May 6, 2022
From the Head of School (for a day)...
Dear Summit School Community,
My experience in 7th grade was extremely quick. I feel like I just started 7th grade yesterday. If you are new to Summit, I promise you will have a great time. All of the teachers at Summit are exceptionally positive. Summit is by far the best private school in Ahwatukee. Summit is overall a great school.
Summit not only provides high quality education, Summit also provides many different unique events. Around halloween time, Summit hosts an event called “Trunk or Treat.” In Trunk or Treat, participants can decorate the trunk of their vehicles with games, TV show/Movie references, and much more. Summit is a great resource you can use to help your child thrive. Summit is one of the best, if not the best school, you can enroll into.
Sincerely,
Hektor Schultz
Head of School for the Day
Teacher (and all school staff) Appreciation Week
Please Welcome, Ana Maria Lay
Mrs. Ana Maria Lay has a Bachelor's degree in education from the Universidad Latina de Costa Rica. She has been teaching for over 25 years as an elementary school teacher (in both English and Spanish) and as a Spanish language teacher for children and adults.
She started teaching in her native country, Costa Rica, where she taught kindergarten as well as 4th, 5th and 6th grade for a number of years. She also started and managed a private preschool/daycare program for Costa Rica's largest industrial park early in her career. In 1997, she moved to Washington, D.C. with her husband and worked at the United States Justice Department Preschool for two years until her husband's work relocated them to Arizona. In 1998 she started working for the Chandler Unified School District (CUSD) in Arizona. In 2012, as her husband's work commitments relocated the family to China. Ana worked as a Lead 4th and 5th grade teacher and Student Admissions Lead for the DAIS American International School in Dalian, China. During this time, she also started and ran the DAIS After School Spanish Program.
Upon her return back to the US in 2012, Mrs. Lay started her own Spanish program which she has been running ever since. This program offered small-group Spanish teaching for children 3 and up, private one-on-one tutoring, and international Spanish summer camps in Costa Rica.
She will be our new Summit School preschool to grade 5 Spanish teacher beginning in 2022-23.

More Great Learning Opportunities Coming to Summit!
- Drone Flight School is coming to in 22-23 as an elective! This new elective will work on building, flying, and programming drones. Students will learn the basics of flight, FAA regulations, and more. Students will have the opportunity to fly drones indoors and outside in windless conditions. We will have obstacles and more to perfect their flying skills. Students will also earn their FAA TRUST license, required for flying drones.
- We have a Japanese Exploratory Language elective that will be offered all four quarters to begin in the fall. Our new teacher, Miss Chanpraphap, will be the instructor.
- We will also offer a class on American Sign Language as an elective. This will be taught by Mrs. Mauermann.
- Mr. Preston and Dr. Nardi will be team-coaching a middle school team of students as they work on HUNCH Prototype and Design 2022. HUNCH (High School Students United with NASA to Create Hardware) is a high school level opportunity, but Summit students have been invited to participate and we are already set up with our NASA mentor. Mr. Preston is a perfect choice to coach as he attended a NASA Space Camp for educators in 2013. This opportunity will take place in enrichment time during the school day. A cap on team size may be determined at a later date.
Spread the word! Summit's offerings are growing and we are eager to meet the needs and interests of our students.
