Balanced Math and EDM
Tips from your TDS
EveryDay Math Lesson Guidance
- Don’t over teach! Every skill within the lesson does NOT need to be taught through a mini-lesson. To understand the primary skill needed per lesson, look at the assessment check-in. This should act as your only teaching point for the day’s lesson.
- You will see many skills in a one day lesson, please remember that those skills will continue to come up and students will continue to practice. Look at the spiral review at the front of the lessons/units to help you see when and where you will see that standard again.
- Don't like the lesson they provide?- teach it your own way, but be sure to stick to the teaching point and to use the vocabulary, so that when it spirals you won't have to fill in the gap.
- Math Boxes- many times this is where you will see the spiraling of the skills, so decide how you will use these as a tool. However, do NOT feel like you have to do every single problem on the page.
- Student journal-don’t get caught up in feeling like the students have to finish all parts of the journals. It’s ok to leave some blank or not to use them everyday!
- Standards-Take a look at the standards of the grade below and familiarize yourself with them. Try to understand what has already been taught at that level so that you don’t feel the need to review, review, review. (Click on links below for standards progressions.)
- Games-introduce them when you see them in the lesson. The games spiral throughout the year based on different standards.
