Maire Newsletter December 10th edition

Dear Maire Families,

The past two weeks have been an emotional rollercoaster for the metro-Detroit community. The tragic events in Oxford, followed by numerous threats posted to social media across the area, really have been hard to process. As teachers and parents, we know how devastating and traumatic all of those events are. Here at school the staff have processed it each in our own way, but together we were preparing ourselves for how to best support our students. Consistency in routines, reminders that school is safe, and that they are loved have been our focus. For the most part, life and school went on as normal this week for our students, which is how we hoped it would go.

Grosse Pointe is continuing to look for ways to improve our emergency procedures, partnering with the local police chiefs and having consultants review our safety plans again. We are fortunate to have many positive things in place already. We have a dedicated staff and administration that wants to ensure our children feel safe and loved at school. We appreciate your partnership and the trust you put in us to take care of your children each and every day.

Sincerely,

Ryan Francis

Magnet nominations due 12/15/21

If you have a current 2nd or 3rd grade student you may be interested in finding out about our magnet program for the fall of 2022. The GPPSS offers a magnet program for 3rd and 4th grade students who exhibit the need for accelerated learning. Please click here for more information and here for an application to nominate your student if you are interested. If you need further information you can also review the information on our district website.

Covid vaccination record upload

Parents and guardians can upload their student's COVID vaccine card using the MiStar Parent Portal by following the directions linked here. According to quarantine guidelines from the Wayne County Health Department, any student who is fully vaccinated will not be required to quarantine if they are identified as a close contact to a COVID positive individual. Uploading your student’s vaccine card will help the district quickly identify those students who will not be required to quarantine. Thank you for doing this once the shots are complete!

Office entrance procedures

As a reminder, all parents entering the building must use our secured vestibule. We ask all parents to use the intercom in the vestibule to gain access to our main office. All volunteers will wear a Maire Volunteer Sticker on the most outer layer of their clothes so it is easily visible (it lets our staff easily see you've checked in).

Please don't be offended if we ask who you are and why you are visiting. Safety is our goal.

Gleaner's Food Drive December 8-22

Maire is proud to participate in the annual Gleaner’s Food Drive this year, from December 8th through December 22nd.

We will be accepting donations in Gleaner’s boxes located in the secure vestibule, as well as in the 1st and 2nd floor hallways.

Canned food donations and non perishable items are most welcome!

Some kind suggestions as you choose what to donate:

-great ideas: coffee, tea bags, boxed milk, salt & pepper, spices, sugar, flour

-can openers are a welcome donation

-mac & cheese and rice a roni are oftentimes donated, but need things added to them (milk or oil) that people don’t always have on hand

Please keep in mind that we cannot accept any glass containers or any expired food items.

Hunger in Southeast Michigan:

614,000 people struggle with hunger, including 146,000 children. More than 300,000 school-age kids receive free and reduced-price school meals. At least 40% of the people Gleaner’s serves are children. Food drives provide a variety of greatly needed food items that go directly to our hungry neighbors.

Every 4 pounds of donated food = 3 meals!

Thank you Maire family!

It's time to order your Maire yearbook!

Yearbook order info can be found here: Maire yearbook

We are working hard to make the Maire yearbook bigger and better, and this year we will have custom front and back covers, designed by Maire 4th graders!

Yearbook cover contest (4th Grade)

We are excited to announce a new contest for all 4th graders. This, and every year moving forward, our 4th graders will be doing an art contest to design our yearbook cover. The school will vote and the top pick will be our front cover and the runner up will be our back cover. We can't wait to see the cover designs, which are due by Wednesday December 15th.

Leader in Me: Put First Things First

For December, we are practicing putting First Things First.

* I do the things that I have to do before I do the things that I want to do.

* I stay focused on what I am doing. I try to minimize distractions and I regroup if I get off task.

* I spend my time on the things that are most important.

Character Word of the Month: Perseverance

This character word perfectly sums up the year 2021 . Here at Maire we continue to work on the whole child, and talking about grit, determination, and effort is more important now more than ever. Perseverance Parent Letter
