A Note From Mr. Bernbaum
By the time you read this, Thanksgiving will be over and the winter holidays will be close at hand. We hope you and your family had a wonderful Thanksgiving, and we wish you a joyous season of winter holidays. This is also the time of year when mental health crises spike. A large reason for this is that people’s hopes or expectations for the holidays end up not matching what actually happens. Probably the foulest word at this time of year is “should”, as in “Everyone should behave a certain way . . .”, or “The dinner should be perfect,” “Christmas should be perfect,” “I should be able to buy more presents for Christmas,” etc. etc. etc. If we can offer a bit of advice, it is this: make the holidays about the people in your life, and not the things. Love them, enjoy them, give the best of yourself to them, and don’t have a “should statement” in mind about how they ought to respond to you.
Have a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year- Mr. Bernbaum
Anti-Racism
How do I talk about it?
Many adults avoid talking about race or racism with children because they don’t feel knowledgeable, or they worry that acknowledging race-based differences will perpetuate racism. In reality, the opposite is true. When parents avoid talking about race or adopt a colorblind approach (“I don’t see color.”), they’re missing an important opportunity to help children identify and understand the harmful effects of racial stereotypes, assumptions, biases (preferences), and social norms or “rules” that exist everywhere. Start these discussions early and make them a regular part of your family’s discussions so that kids learn to value diversity and equity.
