Human Trafficking
Sarah Johnson
"Modern Slavery"
Modern Slavery is looked at as one of the world's most shameful crimes. Human traffickers regard people as commodities and as items that can be exploited and traded for a profit. Although the best-known form of human trafficking is for sexual exploitation, victims are also trafficked for the purpose off forced labor, domestic servitude, child begging, and even removal of their organs.
"People Help the People" By Birdy (2011)
"People Help the People" is originally sung by Cherry Ghost, but covered by Birdy. This song is about helping others in need. So many people are struggling and we don't even realize the things people are going through around us, such as sex slavery and exploitation. Nearly every country in the world is affected. At least 127 countries have been reported to have been exploited in 137 states. There are more slaves in the world today than ever before in history.

"Run" By Chris Rogers & Sara Cariveau (2015)
This song is specifically to make others aware of slavery and human trafficking. Thousands of women and children go missing everyday and are used for sexual labor. There is almost no chance of escaping this kind of lifestyle once involved. "An estimated 30,000 victims of sex trafficking die each year from abuse, disease, torture, and neglect. Eighty percent of those sold into sexual slavery are under 24, and some are as young as six years old."

"For Those Who Can't Speak (Feat. Derek Minor & KB)" By Tenth Avenue North (2014)
In the song "For Those Who Can't Speak", Derek Minor sings "Bring back every girl from the west to the east that He crafted for His glory, not for making you green backs." We need to spread the awareness of human trafficking because the victims can't. An estimate from the International Labor Organization in 2005 indicated that about 2.4 million people are victims of Human Trafficking. Profits are about $32 billion every year.

"Do Something" By Matthew West (2014)
"Do Something" is about of helping those who are in need, instead of just talking about the problem, we as humans need to help each other. So many people are unaware that human trafficking is even going on. There is a misconception that human trafficking takes place elsewhere in the world and not in the United States. However, there are an estimated 293,000 American youths currently becoming victims.

"Rain Delays" By Crash Parallel (2009)
"Rain Delays" is about all of little things wrong with humanity, such as "selling sex for pocket change". Everyone "needs someone to believe in" and get them through hard times. For victims of human trafficking, they also need someone to believe in whether it is thoughts of their family members, friends, or God to get them through what they are facing. The average cost of a slave globally is only $90. "The average age a teen enters the sex trade in the U.S. is 12 to 14-year-old. Many victims are runaway girls who were sexually abused as children."

"Broken" By LIfehouse (2009)
"Broken" is more than a song title, it is a feeling. Victims of human trafficking feel broken and they need comfort and someone to put them back together when they are "falling apart". For victims who have escaped the terrible conditions, they need support and healing. For most children in the sex trade industry, their trafficking situation is not the greatest trauma they have endured. The majority has a history of sexual abuse and neglect.

"False Hope" By Alex Kavvadias (2013)
"MTV EXIT" helps to raise awareness about human trafficking, and they helped to create and promote this song and video. "False Hope" is about a young girl who is about to leave her mother to find a job and better life in a different country (which is why she has a passport) and once she walks out the door she finds herself trapped in the world of modern day slavery which she can't escape. In the United States, the most human trafficing occurs in New York, Californina, and Florida.

"She Breaks" By Vienne (2012)
"She Breaks" is about the stress and anxiety these victims go through when they are sold for sex exploitation. Not only are they being physically abused, but also mentally abused, if not more so. Victims begin to give up and "break down" as they go through this terrible experience. "According to the U.S. State Department, human trafficking is one of the greatest human rights challenges of this century, both in the United States and around the world."
