What We are Learning

Reading: We are currently focusing on fairy tales from diverse cultures.


  • RL.2.2 - Recount stories, including fables and folktales from diverse cultures, and determine their central message, lesson, or moral.


Writing: We are working on an opinion writing unit. Students are learning how to state an opinion and back it up with reasons that support their claim. We are currently writing about our favorite foods.


  • W.2.1 Write opinion pieces in which they introduce the topic or book they are writing about, state an opinion, supply reasons that support the opinion, use

    linking words (e.g.,because, and, also) to connect opinion and reasons, and provide a concluding statement or section.


Fundations: We will finish Unit 11 on Friday. We are focusing on double vowel syllables.


  • RF.2.3 Know and apply grade -level phonics and word analysis skills in decoding.


  • RF.2.3. Decode words with common prefixes and suffixes.


  • RF.2.3. Distinguish long and short vowels when reading regularly spelled one syllable words.


Math: We are focusing on composing arrays from rows and columns, and counting to find the total number of objects.


CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.2.OA.C.4: Use addition to find the total number of objects arranged in rectangular arrays with up to 5 rows and up to 5 columns; write an equation to express the total as a sum of equal addends.


Science: We will continue Dr. Bob's Sound School next week. The kids are really enjoying the curriculum!


  • 2.P.1 Understand the relationship between sound and vibrating objects.


Social Studies: Students will learn about different cultures within our community.


  • 2.C.1 Understand how various cultures influence communities.

Dr. Bob's Sound School

This week we focused on how people create and receive sound.

We learned about vocal cords and the parts of our ears. We used a base bar and an ocean drum to demonstrate how our eardrums vibrate. Ask your child about how people hear sound.

Show Way Quilts

This week we read a story,called Show Way , about a family's tradition of creating quilts that had secret messages that would lead slaves along the Underground Railroad. Students are partitioning shapes into halves, thirds, and fourths to create their own Show Way quilts.
