Mrs. Petersen's Class News

Week of December 1st, 2014

Happy December!

I hope that everyone had a great Thanksgiving! Thank you so much for all of the delicious pies and supplies that were sent in for Pie Day! It was so much fun tasting all of the different kinds of pies and graphing our favorites! Thank you so much!
Now that the turkey has settled, we are back into the swing of things. Read on for important information regarding the next couple of weeks...

From the Cafeteria...

Beginning Monday, December 1st, parents and family members may no longer charge lunch items to their child's lunch account. Parents and family members must purchase their lunch items with cash. We apologize for the inconvenience.

The Amazing Results Are in!

Our class has won a pizza and popcorn party from PTSO for having raised the most money from our Amazing Race! Our pizza and popcorn party has been scheduled for Friday, December 5th at 12:30. Families are welcome to join us, however pizza and popcorn will only be served to the kids (sorry). We will still go to lunch as normal. It is recommended that your child bring a snack to eat in the cafeteria so that they have room for pizza and popcorn at 12:30.

Miss Barbee

Miss Barbee's last day as our student teacher will be Wednesday, December 10th. We are happy to announce that although Miss Barbee will not be in our classroom, she won't be too far away! Miss Barbee will be teaching 1st Grade across the hallway right here at Bethel! We are so excited for her and her new class! As a class, we will be giving Miss Barbee a gift basket of school items for her new classroom. Any donations of new or gently used books, games or school supplies for Miss Barbee's gift basket are greatly appreciated, but please know that this is completely optional.

World of Wonder

Join us for World of Wonder on Thursday, December 11th! Our class along with the first grade team will be showcasing what we have learned in our studies of Christmas Around the World. Our showcase will open at 6:00, however, our classroom will not open until 6:30 after the 3rd grade performance. (My son is in 3rd grade and it would break my heart to miss his performance.) From 6:00 until 6:30, families are welcome to explore Christmas Around the World within our First Grade classrooms. Each classroom will be showcasing a different country, so please be sure to visit each room. Our classroom will be opened at 6:30. I hope to see you there!

A Peek At Our Week

Reader's Workshop

In Reader's Workshop, we are learning all about the Characters in our books. We are learning to look for their Feelings, Actions, what they are Saying and what they might be Thinking (FAST). We are also learning that most characters change throughout the story, usually because of a problem.

Math Workshop

In Math Workshop, first graders are finishing up our unit on "Word Problems". They have learned the following steps to take when solving a word problem:

1. Read the problem.
2. Highlight the question.
3. Write a sentence that answers the question. Leave a blank space for the answer.
4. Solve the problem using start, change = end.
5. Fill in the blank to complete your sentence.

First Grade has done an amazing job solving word problems. They have learned to solve word problems with the unknown in the beginning, middle and end of a problem!

Kindergarten is working on addition to 10 (and beyond)! The kindergartners have also been working on addition word problems as well! Impressive!

Writer's Workshop

In Writer's Workshop, our class has been working on Persuasive Writing. We have focused mostly on persuasive letters and our class has really enjoyed voicing their wants and needs! Next week we will begin our Informational Unit where we will write "All About" books to teach others about a specific topic!

Social Studies

Oh no! There was a catastrophe in the North Pole! Santa accidentally spilled hot cocoa on his computer and has lost all of his files on how Christmas is celebrated around the world! An Elf has mysteriously appeared in our classroom with an envelope marked "Confidential" disclosing Santa's accident along with a plea for us to help! Each night our Elf has been traveling all around the world to see how Christmas is celebrated. Our Elf, Snowflake (as the children have named him), has been collecting information on how other countries celebrate Christmas. After each trip, he brings us information on how that country celebrates Christmas. It is up to us to collect information to alert Santa of how Christmas is celebrated all around the world.
We have had so much fun finding Snowflake each morning and learning all about the Christmas traditions of the places that he has traveled. So far, we have learned all about Christmas in England and Italy. We can't wait to see where Snowflake goes next!
