Cultural background

In the southeast the city of Miami, Florida has a diverse population of more than 400,000 people. African americans have contributed a lot to southerner cultural identities. Ancestors worked as slaves and religious songs called spirituals are popular.

Music and food

African americans also play blues and jazz. Jambalaya is a spicy dish that has sausage or shellfish . and tomatoes, peppers, onions and celery.

Festival time

Mardi Gras in New Orleans, Louisiana is perhaps the most famous celebration in the southeast.

Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat on the bus in Montgomery. Helen Keller the first deaf and blind person to graduate from college, she was born in Tuscumbia, AL.Juliette Gordon the founder of the girl scouts of america, she was born in Savannah, GA. Elvis Presley was born in Tupelo, MS. But moved with his family to Memphis, MS, when he was 13 years old.
