Here's What's on Top at Buena Vista August 17, 2022
Note from the Principal
Good Afternoon Buena Vista Parents,
We are one week into the school year and it has been going great!
Student Learning
So much learning has already started up this year. This week I was able to visit Mrs. Choy's first grade classroom. They were practicing their phonics and identifying the vowels in their names. Then they practiced stretching their learning and counting the syllables in each of their names as well. Some our first graders even saw a pattern...that often, the number of syllables matched the number of vowels in the word. Such great word detectives!
I also was able to visit Mrs. Bockser's 5th grade class during math. They were diving right into our Bridges math lessons and were starting on Unit 1 Expressions, Equations, and Volume. Students were looking for patterns where doubling and halving the dimensions of a shape created patterns with the factors and products they were using to find area. As they realized the patterns and how they worked together they even realized that they could adjust the factor and divisor on both sides by the same number to get the same area. It was fascinating watching them connect the patterns and get excited by using large factors (1,000) to test their theories.
Gentle Reminders for Parents:
Please remember that there is no parent parking in the kindergarten circle on School Lane. If you want to walk your child into class, please park on Buena Vista where it is legal, in the Alvarado parking lot, or on San Juan. Once safety patrol gets going for the year, we will have 4th and 5th grade student leaders help your kindergartner exit the car in the kindergarten drop off area and walk them up. The kindergarten circle (School Lane) drop off is reserved for K-2 graders. If you have a 3-5 grader we ask that you arrange to drop them off on San Juan or Alvarado. Thank you for your cooperation.
There is a no dog policy at Buena Vista School. This also means at drop off and pick up, please do not bring your dog on or off leash onto campus (even the blacktop and grass) from 7:30am-4:00pm, during school hours.
We are a closed campus, once the start bell rings in the morning we ask that all parents and adults who are not staff please exit the campus. If you need to come to campus during the school day, we are asking all parents and parent volunteers to please check in the office first to obtain a visitor's badge. Any adult without a staff id or visitor's badge on campus during the day will be asked to go to the office to check in or to please leave. Here is the volunteer module that must be completed by all parents that will be volunteering on a regular basis.
There has been so much learning happening at Buena Vista. It truly is great to be back!
It is a great day to be a Bulldog!
Respectfully,
Angela Gramlick
Principal
Be safe! Please have your child wear a helmet!
A message from the City of Walnut Creek
The City of Walnut Creek would like to remind staff, parent drivers, and visitors returning to school campuses to be respectful of all traffic laws while driving. Oftentimes, we see higher speeds around schools as drivers rush to get to school before the starting bell. Please slow down, be cautious, be alert, and stay off your phones. As soon as you or someone you love gets out of the car, they become a pedestrian too. Watch out for kids and adults that are walking, biking, scooting, and skating to school.

Meals
We had a shift and are changing Wednesday lunches for TK and Kinder students. On Wednesday kindergartners and transition kindergarteners will have lunch at school. Please pack a lunch or indicate which school lunch you would like for your student to the teachers. Lunch on Wednesday is not longer grab and go!
Drop in Breakfast! New this year, students can 'drop in' the MUR for breakfast M/T/Th/F starting at 7:30am (8:15am on Wednesday). Students arriving close to 7:55am (8:40am Wednesday) will be offered something to 'grab and go' as the playground opens at 7:55am, and they can go play.
(Late TK and Kinder Bulldogs 8:45-9:10am M/T/Th/F.)
Students are not allowed on the blacktop or in the hallways before 7:55am.
Snack! Most children were hungry by the time snack recess arrived. Please send a small, healthy snack they can easily manage (in and out of backpack, packaging, etc.). Water fountains are on, and students are welcome to bring reusable water bottles. We have several water bottle filling stations on campus, and especially with the heat, having a bottle close by is important.
**Please note that some classrooms are nut-free. Your student's classroom teacher will advise you.
Student Drop Off and Pick Up
Please share these guidelines with all members of your family and any other person responsible for transporting your children to and from school. Thank you for your full cooperation in observing all of these guidelines.

CURBS:
Red = No stopping or parking at any time.
White = Pick-up/Drop-off only – Drivers are not to leave cars unattended.
Please drop off and pick up students in the zone designated by the white painted curb in front of the school, near the BV marquee. Students may be dropped off on the east side of the street (and cross the street with the crossing guard) in the area directly across from the main drop-off area. The curb is painted white for this purpose and is for passenger loading (and off-loading) during the hours of 7:30-8:30 a.m. and 1:30-3:30 p.m. Do not park in this area at these times, as you will be cited by the Walnut Creek Police Department.
U-turns are only allowed at intersections where openings for turns are provided. DO NOT turn around in front of the drop-off area.
The parking lot off San Juan Avenue, next to the school office, is for staff and handicapped parking only.
Do not drive into the staff parking area or block the entrance to drop off or pick up students.
This is a reminder that the safest parking area (to avoid a ticket) is located on the school side (west side) of San Juan Avenue. You may park in designated spaces for any amount of time. Be aware that parking on the east side of San Juan is limited to two hours between the hours of 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. You will be cited if you park in this location over the two-hour limit.

Parents are encouraged to use this parking lot and entrance to the school for drop-off and pick-up, as it is a short, safe walk across the field to the playground and the classrooms.

WCEF
A GREAT EDUCATION STARTS WITH A STRONG FOUNDATION
Our school is fortunate to have two non-profit, parent-volunteer led organizations to support our students: PTA/PTO and WCEF TK-12. Both have distinct missions and are critical to creating great schools and supportive communities. To learn more, visit wcefk12.org or your school website.
Every year your donations to WCEF ensure programs at our school not funded by the state like weekly art, music, and science lab in TK-5; electives in world languages, elective classes like ABC Innovation and Cartooning at WCI; Robotics and Coyote Video at Tice; and 13 additional classes at Las Lomas. Donate today and support your child's education!
Every dollar matters. Every student benefits.
