FFA News
FFA recently had a mini officer retreat, they reflected on personnel and chapter goals as well as strategic planning for the remainder of the year. In the agriculture classes, the students have been growing lettuce and other vegetables in the vertical hydroponics units and geodesic greenhouse to be used in the HS food service for student lunches. The FFA Alumni also has an upcoming meat raffle on Sunday, February 17th from 1-3pm at Just Stop In. The FFA also recently participated in the Christmas parade.
National Honor Society
The fall 2018 applicants experienced the new and improved application process, and the advisors want to make the process more transparent for those eligible to apply in the fall of 2019 (those with a 3.6 cumulative GPA following an academic year). One component and change, which was optional this year but will be a requirement starting in the fall of 2019, is that applicants must be able to verify 10 hours of community service completed in the past 12 months. Applicants must also demonstrate ACTIVE involvement in a minimum of 2 activities (in or outside of school) with verification of involvement from advisors. Finally, one other significant change is that applicants have to be able to demonstrate their leadership (might be as captain of a sport, but can also be assuming responsibility within a club or even a classroom) and have that verified. Abiding by national policy, the applications will be reviewed by an anonymous faculty council to determine which students best fulfill all four pillars of scholarship, service, character, and leadership. Advisors hope to have the applications ready for the 2019 eligible applicants by the August orientation night.

Counseling Department News
Academic and Career Planning:
For the second year now, academic advising took place within each student’s career cruising account. All students were asked to meet with an advisor the week of December 10th to assist them, or review, class choices as well as discuss long and short term goals, post high school plans, etc. I would encourage you to ask your student about his/her class choices for next year, and consider logging into the career cruising account together and looking at potential careers and/or colleges of interest. A student can easily save careers, majors and schools to his/her plan by clicking the blue box "save to my plan" in the upper right hand corner in career cruising. Those saved items are then easily accessible from “my plan” at future visits. I would also highly recommend taking a look at the "build my resume" link under the student’s name on the main career cruising page. If students add to their resume all of the events and activities they are involved in from freshman year on, then creating their resumes for letters of recommendation or possible jobs will be much less of a "chore". After inputting the information, the student clicks format and print. As simple as that! Considering the beginning of senior year can be a very busy time, I highly encourage students to take care of this sooner rather than later.
Sophomore Planning Conferences
Sophomore Planning Conferences for 2018 have unofficially come to an end. In tying up loose ends, there has been an announcement placed that any sophomores who were unable to attend their conference schedule a meeting in the counseling office before break. These meetings are always so fun to facilitate and there is so much great information to share with students about the opportunities they have here at WHS and beyond. I really enjoyed spending time with each of the sophomores to hear about their goals/plans and get them some really helpful information.
Some of the feedback this year included responses such as:
*Going through the packets with the school info for colleges was really helpful.
*I liked seeing my transcript and how I stand right now.
*Good way to see all the opportunities we have
*The meeting and information was really helpful and I’m glad I got to hear about 2 year transfer opportunities
*I thought this was very beneficial to learn about career choices and opportunities I have when choosing what to do with my life.
*Thank you so so much. This all made sense and it was easy to follow. I feel more confident with my future.
*If I have questions I know somebody’s right there to help me.
I would encourage you to talk with your students about their conferences. Some questions to start with might be: Which of the post high school options resonated most for you and why? What are some of the takeaways from the conference that you want to make sure you hold onto and follow through with? Are there any follow up questions that you have? Have you completed the matchmaker yet? (This is a great assessment tool that gives students some great feedback on occupations that match up with their interests). I like to pull this up at Junior Conferences if students have answered all 116 questions. Stop in or drop us an email or call if you have any questions! - Amanda -

Youth Risk Behavior Survey
The sophomores at WHS are asked to take part in the Youth Risk Behavior Survey sponsored by the Department of Public Instruction. The survey will ask about health behaviors that keep young people healthy, as well as behaviors that result in unintentional and intentional injuries, tobacco use, and alcohol and other drug use. It will also ask about bullying, sexual risk behaviors, online risk behaviors, stress and anxiety, self-harm, dietary behavior and physical activity. It also focuses on positive things like strong connections to the school and to other people. The survey is completely anonymous and will be completed during tiger time or another time that does not interfere with academic classes. There will be a passive consent form mailed home early January with more information. This will also give parents the opportunity to opt students out of the survey if they do not wish to take it.
