Transitioning to Online Testing for Reading
As a campus, we have selected to have the Reading STAAR administration online. Our students have been practicing all year long, through their Campus Based Assessments, District Learning Assessments, Reading Interim Assessments, and Cambium Field Tests. They have practiced with the numerous online features Cambium has to offer.

Practice at Home with an Online Practice Test
Have your child take a practice test that shows what the online testing environment and tools will be like.
Click HERE for Online Practice Tests - this view will look familiar to your child. This is the same site we use for Reading Interims & Field Tests. STAAR will use this same platform.
Don’t Stress; Do Your Best
Before the test, the best preparation is to help your child spend some time relaxing, getting a good night’s rest, and eating healthy meals.
The Night Before:
- Make sure that your child gets a good night’s sleep.
- Be encouraging - let your child know that you think he/she will do well on the test.
- Plan for the morning ahead – lay out clothes to wear; backpacks can stay home.
The Day of the Test:
- Get up early to avoid rushing.
- Have your child eat a good breakfast. Remember – sugary foods can make your child drowsy.
- Have your child dress in something comfortable.
- Be sure that your child attends school each day and arrives on time. Please try to avoid scheduling doctor or dental appointments on test days.
- Be positive and supportive. Acknowledge that test taking can be hard and explain that doing your best is what counts.
- Send your child off to school feeling confident. “You’ll do a great job!”; “Believe in yourself!” and “I love you!” are always nice to hear.
After STAAR Results Arrive (end of May)
As a campus we'll be analyzing STAAR data to see which students need 30 hours of intervention for the 22-23 school year (because they failed STAAR or did not take it). Meetings will be set to put a plan for them in action.
Summer Learning Opportunity
Any 5th grade student who does NOT perform satisfactorily on the STAAR Reading and/or Math will be invited to attend Katy ISD's HB4545 Summer Camp (June 6 - June 30). Students who only need 30 hours of accelerated learning in science should not attend summer camp.
Benefits:
- Students will earn 30 hours of Math and/or Reading accelerated learning.
- It is free. Transportation will be provided.
- Students will leave with greater confidence in their shift to junior high.
