FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Dear Davis Families,


As we welcomed February last week, we also celebrated the 100th day of school. When I think about all the accomplishments of our students so far this year, it’s so impressive to know that they have achieved so much in what is really a short amount of time. At the same time, the 100-day milestone reminds us that we are left with less than 80 days of school this year. As the semester continues to progress, the expectations for learning will continue to be high for all students, and we look forward to celebrating their many accomplishments.


January was quite eventful at Davis. We were glad to have parents join us for Parent & Teacher Collaboration Night. While the turnout was not as high as we had hoped, we appreciated the time with parents to share academic information and strategies for parents to support their child’s learning at home. Many families came out to participate in Family Fitness Night. It was great having the opportunity to be active together with children, parents, staff, and community members. We celebrated the work of our young scientists at the Science Fair Exhibition and Awards event. The work of the students was truly incredible, and several will go on to represent Davis at the Austin Energy Regional Science Fair. Several Davis artists had their artwork selected to be a part of the district art exhibition, and their artwork will remain on display until next week at the AISD Performing Arts Center.


In addition to celebrating student accomplishments, at this time of year we also go through a process to recognize one teacher at Davis as Teacher of the Year. We are fortunate to have teachers who are not only highly qualified, but also who are passionate about teaching and consistently go above and beyond to provide an exceptional school experience for all children. This year, Davis staff selected Nicole Garry as Davis Teacher of the Year. Ms. Garry teaches art to students in grades 1-5 and has been a part of the Davis staff for many years. She has worked this year to implement innovative teaching practices, including a Careers in Art project based learning unit, and she represents the very best of Davis. Along with Teacher of the Year, Austin ISD recognizes staff in other positions and has an open nomination process for including exemplary staff from across the district in the process. We recently learned that three Davis staff have been nominated for recognition: Courtney Cartlidge for Assistant Principal of the Year, Lauren Meyer for Librarian of the Year, and Teresa Clement for Classified Staff of the Year. These stellar staff members will represent Davis in the district selection process.


With the growth we have seen at Davis this year, along with demographer projections for continued growth, it is important for us to ensure adequate facilities for our students. We are currently utilizing 100% of the space available and are not ‘overcrowded.’ In order to plan for projected growth, we will be forming a Facilities and Building Planning Advisory Committee (FABPAC). The purpose of this group will be to develop a Davis facility plan to present to the district FABPAC, so that the facility needs of Davis are considered as the district facilities plan is developed. Any interested parent, guardian, or friend of Davis is welcome to participate. Looking ahead, at our CAC meeting this afternoon, we will discuss next year’s campus budget, campus goals for next school year, and projected enrollment/implications for our area schools. I will host a principal coffee next Tuesday morning, with a focus on our implementation of project based learning (PBL) and how this relates to our campus and district strategic plan. I will also share information on enrollment projections for next year and how this will impact our grade level structure.


PTA volunteers are hard at work now (and have been for awhile) planning for the annual Big To-Do event. It’s something I really look forward to, as it is not only a fundraiser for our school, but also a time to enjoy the company of Davis parents and friends in an informal setting. I will not be able to attend this year due to an out of town family event. I am sorry to miss the Big To-Do, but will definitely be there in spirit. I’ll look forward to a pancake breakfast with whichever students ‘win’ my Teacher Treat at the auction. I hope you all will attend the Big To-Do if you are able, and thank you in advance for supporting Davis in this way.

UIL A+ ACADEMIC COMPETITION!

This Spring, Davis Elementary Students in grades 2-5 will have an opportunity to participate in a University Interscholastic League (UIL) Academic Meet with other students from across Austin ISD. The purpose is to provide students the opportunity to academically compete with their peers in a fun supportive environment. UIL Academic contests helps students develop oral language and communication skills, become independent readers and writers, develop conceptual understanding, learn to solve problems and apply knowledge to all facets of their lives. OFFICE NEWS

NEW STAFF: We have a new face in the Davis Front Office! Please welcome our new registrar, Gina Campos. She is new to the school system and is looking forward to learning everything. We are very excited to have her join our team.


PLEASE HELP: The office always needs help with answering the front door during the busy lunch times. Your child can sit with you and eat their lunch at the table reserved for our door helpers in the front lobby located under our monitor. If you're not having lunch with your child, you are also welcome to sit in the office to answer the front door. This would be especially helpful to us during this time of training our new registrar as she will be off campus periodically in trainings and we will be short staffed. *NEW* DAVIS EVENT FORM: We have a new, electronic version of the green Special Event form that is used to reserve space and get events put on the master calendar. As we transition to the online form, paper copies will still be available in the office.

SPRING PICTURES

1st Photo is coming back to Davis to take Class Pictures and individual Spring Pictures on Thursday, February 25. Class pictures need to be ordered and paid for in advance. A sample of the individual picture will be sent home and you can decide at a later date if you would like to order the individual picture. We will take a 5th Grade Group photo on Friday, February 26th. This picture will also need to be ordered and paid for in advance. Look for the order forms to come home in Wednesday folders on February 17. Mark your calendars and don’t miss your class picture. There are no makeup dates for class pictures.

LOST & FOUND

This crazy hot cold weather has contributed to our large pile of lost and found jackets, sweaters and more. Please encourage your children to browse for their coats on their way to lunch. The Lost and Found is located across from the hand washing sink next to the cafeteria. Parents are welcome to check anytime. We love to find names in the jackets so we can return them to their owners.
