"Oh! The Places We'll Go!"
WHAT'S NEW? (November 14, 2014)
Hi Parents,
We hope you enjoyed your Veteran's Day!
We have one more week until Thanksgiving Break, which will bring us to the end of the first trimester. Time sure flies when you are having fun!
Stay warm this weekend,
Mrs. Sanchez and Mrs. Mirza
P.S. Please encourage your child to wear hats and gloves. It is cold out there during recess time.

Math
This week in math the students were introduced to some math games to reinforce the lessons on fractions. They also learned how to add and subtract mixed numbers with or without renaming. They worked on simplifying their answers to lowest terms. Subtracting with renaming is a bit more challenging, so we will practice more problems next week. I anticipate giving the Chapter 3 test on Thursday, November 20th.
Writer's Workshop
This week in writing, the students continued to work on descriptive writing and finally finished describing their turkey's!
This week our Mentor Sentence came from the book, Verdi by Janell Cannon. The sentence was: "I'm the speediest snake in the jungle and I'm still turning green." The students identified nouns, verbs, pronouns, adjectives. They were guided to identify a suffix in this sentence, then we discussed comparative and superlative adjectives. The students also learned about linking verbs. (Ask your child to sing the linking verb song to you.)

Reader's Workshop
We learned about our last signpost, "Memory Moment". This is a part in a book when the author interrupts the action to tell you a memory.
When a reader identifies this, he should ask the question, "Why is this memory important?"
The answers will tell us about the theme and conflict or it might be foreshadowing what will happen later.
We used an excerpt from the book, Hope Was Here by Joan Bauer to help us identify this signpost.

Science
This week in our Ecology unit, the students completed their energy pyramid including animals found around Northbook.
In science lab, the students learned about water pressure. They completed an activity to find if there is a relationship between water pressure and depth under the surface of a body of water. They found the answer to "Does water pressure increase or remain constant as one goes deeper below the surface?"
They also learned how ocean water is different than rain or fresh water. Mr. Toops showed a video about the Dead Sea.
