NES MOUNTAIN MEMO
November 22, 2019
From Principal Reckert
Dear Nederland Elementary Families,
In this season of gratitude, I want to express my gratitude for the Nederland Elementary community. Again, I want to say thank you to everyone for your support of our registrar, Sheila, during this very difficult time. I would also like to address my gratitude for those of you who volunteer at NES on a regular basis and for those of you who help out when you are able. Thank you to those of you who serve on the PTA and SAC to help make our school a wonderful place. Most of all, thank you for sending us your amazing children every day. It is our joy and pleasure to teach them and grow with them!
Have a fantastic Thanksgiving break,

Who's Who on the NES Staff?
Mary Waddell, Kindergarten Teacher
A little about me:
I grew up in Wisconsin and played school for hours on end. Luckily, my best friend had a little sister who was always willing to be the student in our class. I taught preschool during college but didn’t get my teaching certificate until after my daughters were in elementary school. This will be my thirteenth year teaching. I am excited to be teaching kindergarten again after teaching first grade for 6 years and being teacher-librarian for 2 years!
A little about my family:
I have a husband, 2 daughters, a dog, and a fish. Rick and I have been married for 30 years! We like to camp, hike and play disc golf together. Emma, our older daughter, is starting her career as a speech pathologist this year in Oregon and Natalie is working toward becoming an accountant at CU. Both of them went through the Nederland schools which prepared them well for their learning journeys.

I moved to Colorado two and a half years go because I fell in love with the state while visiting friends. I am super excited to be starting my first year in kindergarten in such an amazing community! I previously taught preschool for two years.
A little bit about my family:
My family lives back in Pennsylvania, right outside of the Philadelphia area. I am the middle child between two boys. My older brother Duncan has a daughter named Lily and she is two years old. Lily is such a sweetheart and she is very special to me. I love to visit my family as often as I can.

Social Emotional Learning at NES
Social Emotional Learning at NES (Nov 18-22, 2019)
One very important strategy that we all need to learn is how to Ask for Help from Supportive People in our lives when we are facing challenges. Talking to trusted adults can help a child feel better when they are overwhelmed. Adults can serve as the child's Wizard Brain -- soothing their intense emotions and helping them problem solve. Traditional gender norms have often discouraged males from seeking help and talking about their feelings. The impact of stuffing vulnerable feelings and trying to be self-sufficient has led to increased physical health problems, relationship problems, depression, violence and higher rates of suicide for males.
Students practiced identifying which adults in their lives they could turn to for help and how to assertively ask for assistance. As caring adults, who want our children to have strong social-emotional skills, we can make sure we are listening carefully to their feelings and needs, practicing calming strategies with them, reassuring them with hugs and encouragement, and coaching them to think through how best to solve their problems. For those kinds of adults in their lives, children are eternally grateful.
