Ms. Mooney's Spring Newsletter
Ms. Mooney 6th Grade School Counselor
Spring is just around the corner and the 3rd trimester has begun. The work has started getting harder but 6th graders are up for the challenge. Counseling staff and peer leaders have gone into the 6th grade classrooms to review student success plans and learning style inventory results in Naviance. The learning style inventory helps students realize what their learning style is as a student and how they learn best. I am currently working with 6th grade students to help them improve their study skills such as organization, how to study, how to take notes, and time management.
For the month of April 6th graders have many exciting topics to look forward learning about in their classes. In 6th grade math classes Mrs. White and Mrs. Tovino will be working with the 6th graders to learn about equations, inequalities, integers, and coordinate planes. In science classes Mrs. Ryen and Mr. Dudas will be teaching 6th graders about ecosystems, food webs, and water contamination. In our social studies classes students’ will learn about how different civilizations from, analyzing civilizations, and Hammurabi's Code. They will also be conducting a social studies debate. In our language arts classes with Mrs. Olivieri and Ms. Tulipane 6th graders will be choosing a topic and doing research to write an argumentative paper. They will start this unit by doing a debate and learning how to acknowledge counterclaims. If your child is struggling academically in a class he/she can ask questions, attend Homework Club, go see the teacher during XL, etc. As a parent it is helpful to check their grades and assignments on Infinite Campus and keep in contact with their teachers.
7th grade is right around the corner. If your child has only taken 1 world language so far in 6th grade he/she can pick undecided, or make a choice, and change their mind at a later date on the form. A student can change his/her world language choice from undecided to a world language, French to Spanish, or Spanish to French by letting Ms. Graves or Ms. Smith know.
The counseling staff, school psychologist, and social worker taught lessons on bullying and harassment last month in 6th grade. 6th graders learned what bullying is, what to do about it, and who to go to for help. We reviewed with students to report bullying right away. If they can’t find the staff member they would like to tell go to the next person. We have a zero tolerance for bullying at our school.
The middle school has many fun clubs to join after school. 6th graders can have fun doing an activity in one or more of these groups and socialize at the same time. It is a great way to meet different students. This is a list of some of the clubs that we offer: Broadcast Journalism Club, Gamer’s Guild, Makerspace, and Homework Club.
