The beginning to the end
Samuel Langhorne Clemens was born in Florida, Missouri, November 30, 1835. When Sam was 4 years old his family moved to Hannibal, Missouri. Sam was poor growing up. He really loved swimming, fishing, playing pirates, and pulling pranks. Clemens first experience was in a print shop, and his only educations were in print shops, newspaper offices, and public libraries. Sadly, in 1847, Sam’s father died of pneumonia. When Sam was 17 years old he left Hannibal. In 1857, he made plans to travel to South America. Right after he left Hannibal he became a licensed riverboat pilot in 1859. He died of a heart disease near Redding, Connecticut 1910.

The name Mark Twain comes from a riverboat term meaning two fathoms, a depth of 12 feet, or 3.7 meters. It was given to him on February 3, 1863. He was the first American celebrity and the first American author. He was mostly famous because he wrote popular novels like “The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, and “The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn.
