Math Workshop
Mathematicians have been increasing their math vocabulary and understanding since our last newsletter with the beginning of our Geometry unit. We began with the beginning concepts of point, line, line segment, ray, parallel and perpendicular lines and the 3 types of angles (right, acute and obtuse). Some families have gone and added a protractor to their home mathematical tools! That’s great practice for your student. After this week our Geometry unit turns towards triangle classification. Exciting!
Questions to ask about math:
How would you make an acute angle? A right angle? An obtuse angle?
Can you draw me an Obtuse Scalene triangle?
How can you tell parallel and perpendicular lines apart?
Reading/Language Workshop
Readers are currently exploring how words can be powerful in Unit 6. We began the unit with a book titled, Elizabeth Leads the Way: Elizabeth Cady Stanton and the Right to Vote. Students learned how one strong voice of one strong woman changed the thinking of American lawmakers. Kids were surprised to hear that women were not always allowed to vote, and had to wear skirts and dresses, rather than pants!
This week, students read Harvesting Hope; the Story of Cesar Chavez. We learned how one man who believed in equal rights for farm workers made a difference for many, through peaceful protesting and negotiations. Students tied these strong leaders with our own Learner Profile Traits that we recognize at Rose Glen. Literature Discussion Groups continue to center around our essential question, “How can language be powerful?”
Writing Workshop
Writers are using powerful language to craft persuasive letters that highlight a topic that they are interested in. We began our unit looking at a couple of very well written models, while we discussed what made these letters effective. Students didn’t take long to recognize that the strong letters had reasons and evidence that supported the writer’s desired outcome. We then began to generate ideas of topics to write about. The students have some pretty big ideas, and now need to take on the task of creating strong arguments to support these ideas!
Social Studies
We have officially entered our unit around Economy! Students were thrilled to have had a representative come in from EverFi as he walked them through an interactive activity around the business world. They have this available on their iPads and enjoy learning about spending and saving. We introduced key vocabulary that would help students be successful with their economy store! Each student has the opportunity to be an entrepreneur as they work to create their own business, products, and setting their own prices. We are having a blast understanding how money works, and students are working hard to earn their own income throughout the day. For example, if students have their iPads charged, they get $1. If they are on green all day, they get $1. However, they are also learning how in the real world, expense is a very real topic. Talking in the hallway and having a messy station makes students owe $1 when the health inspector comes around! We are excited to open our stores next week!
Questions to ask about Social Studies:
What are some things that we need to save for?
What are wants and what are needs?
Ask about their products. How much are they selling them for? What is their slogan? How much money do they have to spend?
