Principal's Message
We have had such a wonderful first quarter with our students! Within the Leader In Me framework, we talk a lot about the Four Quadrants for Time Management, and it's fitting as we enter Q2, we will be focusing on Q2! Allow me to explain...
Quadrant 1 is the Quadrant of "Fire fighting" -- Things that are Urgent and Important...in Q1, you feel as though you are always putting out fires! In some ways, the Hybrid learning model felt like Q1 because it was so new and different for teachers, students, and families alike. It felt difficult to ever "get ahead" or find a balance. We were all adjusting, but it was still definitely a steep learning curve!
Quadrant 2 is the Quadrant of "Quality Living" - When you are spending time in this Q2, you are productive, thinking ahead and planning, and working on things that are Important but not necessarily Urgent. You may be building relationships/spending quality time with friends and family, planning ahead on a project, doing homework, exercising, or starting a crockpot for dinner!
Quadrant 3 is the Quadrant of Distraction - Q3 is the quandrant when your time is eaten up by Unimportant things that seem Urgent to you OR others. Interruptions, checking your phone each time you get a text/email, or someone else distracting you from being in Q2 is a Quadrant that is easy to find yourself in. For kids, this may be screen distractions, sibling distractions, or other interruptions to their learning or staying on-task.
Quadrant 4 is the Quadrant of Waste - This is the Quadrant of Excess when you spend excessive time on Unimportant things that are not Urgent. Some time on social media, Netflix, or relationship building is simply sharpening the saw, and not detrimental to your mental or physical health, and does not take away from your other responsibilities. As soon as you spend TOO much time on something in this quadrant, and it takes away from other responsibilities or leaves you feeling behind or stressed, you have found yourself in Q4.
Now that we are settling into a more typical routine (goodbye Q1, hello Q2!), we are beginning to get back to some of our practices that help to motivate students and work on goal setting, in other words, spending Q2 in Q2! We are going to work to implement our building-wide Positive Behavior Interventions & Supports (PBIS) in which students are taught and recognized for Being Proactive and Beginning With the End in Mind. We want to work on students recognizing their emotions and how to regulate their emotions with their actions and self-talk. Students earn tickets throughout the building for demonstrating these behaviors, which go toward earning classroom rewards! We have used this system for several years, and the students really pay attention to their behavior and attitudes as Leaders!
We will also be working with students on setting Wildly Important Goals (WIGs) for learning and personal life, and recognizing them for reaching these goals. Our students are pretty amazing, and the more we focus on how to stay in Q2, the sooner we reach our learning goals!
This week, teachers will also be holding their Quarter 1 Student Recognition Celebrations within each class, rather than in an all-school assembly. Students in each class will be recognized for demonstrating leadership skills among their peers, and during Essentials classes as well. Be on the lookout to see which students were recognized in each classroom! We do this every quarter as a way to recognize our students and the growth they make throughout the year.
Finally, as we develop Q2 planning for this school year, our Site Council and PTA are excited to offer several Parent Education Nights on zoom to help YOU stay in Q2 Learning Mode along with our staff. We will be offering the following zoom night events, each lasting 1 hr:
- The Science of Reading: Research-based reading strategies used at Riverview.
- Living Leadership at Home: This session will focus on building a Family Mission Statement.
- Diversity, Equity and Inclusion: The importance of celebrating diversity and creating an inclusive community.
- Mental Health: Safe + Sane + Seen: Helping parents navigate the world of online learning for your children (more information below)
Sincerely,
Beth Mildren
Principal

Safe + Sane+ Seen
USD 232 is proud to partner with Johnson County Mental Health to offer parents a free workshop to help them navigate the world of online learning with their children.
The parent education workshop will be held on November 12 at 7:00 p.m. We will share this event with all families in the district through Skyward.
Johnson County Mental Health is providing the program through START, a nonprofit organization that provides tips, tools, and trainings to help parents raise healthy, happy kids in an increasingly digital world.
The specific program is called Safe + Sane + Seen: A workshop to help you survive virtual learning. This program is designed to help parents manage screens during virtual learning—maximizing their benefits, but minimizing the negative side effects.

Logistics Updates
1. Thank you to everyone who has kept true to their Going Home Method for Quarter 1. I know it limits some parental flexibility in how students go home each day, but it really does tremendously help to limit the tangled knot of potential contact tracing. Students do not sit with just their class or grade for car loop, walker room, or bus room, so it is needed for us to keep on file and keep consistent. Please be on the lookout for communication from your classroom teachers for being able to change your child’s Going Home Method for ALL of Quarter 2. This will be due by Nov. 5 so we can create new seating arrangements in all locations before Q2 starts Nov. 9.
2. Please try to keep with the separated K-2 and 3-5 car loops each morning until 8:40 am. After 8:40 am, we are going to try allowing families to go in either car loop to speed up Arrival. For the last 5 minutes of arrival, please just choose the shortest car line loop, so your child can get to class as soon as possible.
3. You may recall that the district is no longer taking student temperatures prior to building entry. Parents have been incredibly proactive in keeping students at home if they are not feeling good, and we ask that if you have a way to take your child’s temperature before they arrive at school, please consider doing so, to prevent any child from arriving to school with a fever, thank you!!
