First Year Update

Week 6; October 8th-15th

Community Meeting Information:

Community Meetings are required for first year students residing in the following communities: Smith Hall, Curtis West Hall, Curtis East Hall, Shorney Hall. They are an opportunity for your hall to come together to address community concerns and gather important information necessary for second semester. Academic and Athletic (practices, games) are the only excuse to miss these meetings. If you have a valid excuse, you must email with your reason for missing the meeting by Sunday October 19th.

Please review the date, time and location of your building's Community Meeting. Failure to attend these meetings, sign in and arrive on time will result in the loss of your lottery number for next year's housing lottery. These meetings are required.

  • Herrick Hall, Monday Oct. 20th, 8:00pm-9:30pm, Curtis East Community
  • Slayter Auditorium, Monday Oct. 20th, 8:00pm-9:30pm, Shorney Hall Community
  • Herrick Hall, Tuesday Oct. 21st 8:30pm-9:30pm; Curtis West Community
  • Herrick Hall, Thursday Oct. 23rd, 8:00pm-9:30pm, Smith Hall Community

Email by Oct. 16th if you have a valid (academic/athletic commitment) excuse. Failure to attend the community meetings may result in the loss of your lottery number for the 2015 Residential Housing Selection Process.

Important Deadline Reminder: October 29 - Last day to drop courses for entering first-year students. An "F" or "U" will be awarded if one withdraws from a course after this date.

RA Information Sessions-Mandatory for new applicants!

Attending ONE information Session is required of all new Resident Assistant Applicants.

(Note: There are plenty of information sessions. If you are serious about applying for the position you will make time to attend one session)

  • First Year Students are not required to submit a GPA. We will review midterm grades of all first year applicants
  • First Year Students can use non-Denison references (such as a high school teacher) and they can have their current RA write a reference letter for the position.

Worried about the interview? Have no fear!

Attend a program on interviewing skills on November 13th at 7:00pm on the 3rd floor of Slayter. Professionals in the Center for Career Exploration and Development along with current RAs will help you navigate the interview process and help you with any questions you may have about applying for the RA position (This is highly recommended for all RA applicants as the job is competitive!!).

Highlighted F.L.Y Program: Conversations and Contradictions-Discussion about Privilege!

Last week 18 first year students and their RAs gathered to discuss how someone in a dominant culture can be an ally and advocate for the oppressed. Finding the Leader in you (F.L.Y) programs are First year programs designed specifically for the class of 2018. The next program will be on Nov. 13th at 7:00pm on the 3rd floor of Slayter!
