26 August, Term 3 - Week 5
Dear Parents, Whānau and Caregivers
A special welcome to Asmaa who has joined Room 5 in Team Pounamu and to Aven who has started school in Team Uenuku. Kia ora and welcome to our friendly school!
Teacher Only Day - 2 September
A friendly reminder that Paparangi School will be closed next Friday, 2 September, for a Teacher Only Day for staff professional development. Teachers and teacher aides are working on our local curriculum and learning new strategies for developing children's oral language skills and proficiency.
Staffing News
I am pleased to let our school community know that in term four Loreece Vesty returns from parental leave and will be Room 4’s teacher for the rest of the year. We are delighted to have Loreece return to Paparangi School and know she will be a wonderful addition to Team Pounamu. For the remainder of this term Marilyn Daly and Leah Fuimaono (Mrs Fui) will continue their job-share role like they have been doing since the start of term three. Amanda Newbery, Team Leader, or myself will be contacting R4 parents over the next few weeks about the staffing changes.
Pizza Fundraiser
Dominos in Johnsonville is helping Paparangi to fundraise for new outdoor play equipment. We are fundraising for a climbing frame for the bank between Pounamu and Uenuku next to the junior playground. Buy pizza from Dominos in Johnsonville on Thursday 1 September and they will donate $1 to the school for every pizza sold. This was a very successful fundraiser for the school last year so Dominos have extended the time from 10:30am until late. Check out the flyer below for all the information. Thanks Dominos for supporting our school!
Calendar Art Fundraiser
We are delighted to be running the Calendar Art Fundraiser again this year. The students have been creating their art works which will be shared with you digitally over the next week or two by their teacher. You will be able to purchase calendars, notebooks, diaries and note cards showcasing your child's artwork. More details regarding prices and the ordering process will follow in a separate notice. Any queries should be directed to rebecca@paparangi.school.nz. Thank you to the Home and School committee for your support to administer this fundraiser.
Help Wanted
Do you have a very, very tall ladder? We need help to retrieve sports equipment up high in a tree, there's quite a collection up there and it's out of our reach! Please contact the office if you can help.
Positive Behaviour for Learning (PB4L)
Great job Paparangi, to fill the GROW tower in record time with lots and lots of GROW tokens! Now it's time to think about what "P" person or thing you might dress-up as on Monday? I wonder what "P" the teachers will be?

Fantastic news Paparangi!
Paparangi School is getting a new playground! Thanks to The Trusts Community Foundation who have provided a grant to the school, work can now get underway to design and build a brand new senior playground. This generous grant, combined with funds the Home and School Committee has raised already, means the school is finally in a position to make a start on this long awaited project. The timeline is not yet finalised but work is expected to start before the end of the year.
We have lots of ideas already from students, parents and whanau that were shared with us when the school's Master Plan was developed in 2020. We'll be using these ideas to inspire the playground designers the school is working with. Then in a few weeks we'll be seeking input from students and their families - so start thinking Paparangi! What sort of playground helps to grow adventurous learners?
Thanks to the Rout and Jaggard families who won the bids for the firewood we recently auctioned off. Thanks also to Alec Barrett and Laurie Coyne for helping to install our new digital equipment in classrooms last week. Thanks for helping to make our school a better place!
Sports News
Y1-3 Cross Country
Congratulations to our Y1-3 runners who represented the school at the Northern Zones Junior Invitational at Amesbury School yesterday. We're really proud of all of our amazing students for showing grit, trying their best and cheering on team mates! Thanks to our wonderful parent helpers who provided transport and helped with supervision. Tumeke Paparangi!
Swimming Sports
Last week Rākau Nui had their school swimming sports at Tawa Pool. This was a great event where all students were involved at an appropriate level for their swimming ability. It was great to see this event happen again after it being cancelled due to COVID for the past two years. Students raced against each other and had their races timed to find out who would go on to represent Paparangi School at the Northern Zones event taking place at the Regional Aquatic Centre in Kilbirnie today.
Congratulations to the following students. We hope you had a great time today representing Paparangi School: Ruby, Josie, Isabella B, Tegan, Noah M, Andy, Veer, Luke, Jack, Kaitiaki, Evan, Max S, Holly, Siena, Courtenay, Sophia S, Cameron, Zach, Angus, Ryan M, Stella, Anusha and Cherrie.
We also would like to thank the incredible number of parents who came along last week to help run our event. It was great to see so many parents there to support all of our tamariki and volunteer for the various jobs on the day. It really made for a smooth event. A special thank you to those parents who also helped at the Northern Zones event today. These events rely on parents/volunteers from the community and can not run without them.

The Ministry of Health has confirmed that the guidance for returning to school following vomiting or diarrhoea is as follows:

- Following vomiting or diarrhoea, a child should be symptom free for 48 hours before they return to school.

Marrzipan Drama
“I can’t work like this! Where is the dinosaur?”
Marrzipan Drama is halfway through the term. But it isn’t too late to come give it a go!
Does your little human get a bit shy from time to time? Then Marrzipan is for them. Does your little human love to show off and get up on a stage? Then Marrzipan is for them! As well as playing a bunch of drama-based games, we also work on a performance each term. This term we are doing a play called: ‘The Play Where Everything Goes Wrong”. It’s a play about a play that goes wrong…right?
