In what will surely become a highlight for their school year, our 2/3 class put on a performance of Peter and the Wolf this week in Rand Hall.
COVID restrictions have made teaching a challenge, but also an opportunity for creativity in the curriculum. Mr. Abbondanzio, our music teacher, has stepped up to the challenge and done some very fun lessons with our students. Last week, as students listened to Peter and the Wolf, they were encouraged to act out the story as a class. All of the grades enjoyed the lesson so much that they begged Mr. A to do it again this week.
However, one group in particular really took the class to the next level: Our 2/3 classroom cast roles, created costumes, and invited a limited number of guests to come watch their performance. Father Justin, Principal Beam, and students from the 1st grade were all invited down on Thursday afternoon to enjoy their performance. It was such fun to watch them come together as a group and experience the excitement and pride that comes from performing for a crowd.
The 1st graders were so respectful as an audience. They sat quietly and listened. They giggled and laughed at the silly parts, and looked on with anticipation during the more dramatic parts. It felt like the Saint Michael School we have all known and loved in years past... it was wonderful! We wish you all could have been there but we hope these photos will suffice.
Mark your calendars for March 2028 when these guys are all in high school together. We are going to have an incredible drama production that year!
Catholic Schools Week will be celebrated here at SMS from February 1st thru the 5th
Since 1974, National Catholic Schools Week is the annual celebration of Catholic education in the United States. It starts the last Sunday in January and runs all week, which in 2021 is January 31 – February 6. The theme for National Catholic Schools Week 2021 is “Catholic Schools: Faith. Excellence. Service.” Schools typically observe the annual celebration week with Masses, open houses and other activities for students, families, parishioners and community members. Through these events, schools focus on the value Catholic education provides to young people and its contributions to our church, our communities and our nation.
So, as is tradition here at Saint Michael School, we will have a series of activities to enjoy as a community:
Monday, Feb 1st: Read a thon. This day will look different by grade, and instructions will come home from your teachers, as needed. Students will not be permitted to bring in blankets and pillows as in years past. Hopefully we can resume the fort building next year. Thank you for your support in helping the students to understand.
Tuesday, Feb 2nd: Community Service Students will create Valentines Day cards and write letters to send to homebound parishioners, nursing home residents, our seminarians, and military personnel.
Wednesday, Feb 3rd: BINGO day At 2pm we are going to take advantage of the new phone system and play an all school game of Bingo over the new intercoms. Students are encouraged to wear crazy hats and socks to make their PE attire more festive for the day.
Thursday, Feb 4th: All-School Private Mass in the Morning
Friday, Feb 5th: Field Day activities will be planned and students are invited to dress down today!
Our high school drama production is underway and we'd love your help with the set!
