100 YEARS OF EXCELLENCE 📸
Tasked with the responsibility of documenting 100 years of Tustin High School’s legacy, this year's yearbook class has risen to the challenge of capturing the present while honoring the past. Led by their senior editors, Michael Ma and Michelle Cisneros, the students are excited to create a yearbook that will stand the test of time. Cicneros declared, “We want to create a book that will be timeless.”
New advisor, Darin Nakakihara, is excited to support his enthusiastic class. “Mr. Zamora left some big shoes to fill and I’m grateful for the program he built. These kids are amazing, and this book is one that you will not want to miss out on.”
This year's yearbook will pay homage to our school’s 100-year history. It will not only be filled with all the great things that happen this year, but it will also tie in all the wonderful memories of the past 100 years. There are 34 incredibly talented students who are passionate about Tustin High School and ready to create a magical yearbook for our school.
Yearbooks are on sale for $80 until October 8, 2021. At www.jostensyearbooks.com
BACK IN THE LAB! 🔬
By Abbey Zinsser, Tustin High Chemistry Teacher
Move over video labs and virtual simulations! After over a year with most students out of the classroom, chemistry students are back in the lab! During the first couple weeks of school, chemistry students have been busy getting their hands dirty. All levels of chemistry have been in the lab developing their scientific skills by asking questions, planning and carrying out investigations, analyzing data and writing conclusions based on evidence. AP Chemistry students were able to determine the empirical formula of a substance using calculations and lab skills after a reaction between magnesium and hydrochloric acid. Chemistry students are diving deep in our crime solving unit. They took on the Test Tube Challenge where they had to create a test tube with three distinct colored layers using only given supplies. Lastly, students were able to determine Who Stole the Mole by designing their own experiment, interpreting data and using evidence to prove who the thief was. We look forward to developing our lab skills and becoming scientists.
LINK CREW LEADER SPOTLIGHT: HALEY OCKEY
By Link Crew Coordinators Lindsay Fay & Alicia Fortier
Every year, Link Crew recruits upcoming Juniors & Seniors who want to help make a positive difference in our school by building relationships and helping our new Freshmen have a great start to their high school experience. When selecting Link Crew Leaders, we are looking for students who are kind, caring, and willing to reach out to students who need a friend. This month, we are recognizing Senior Leader & Link Crew Commissioner Haley Ockey for her amazing attitude and outreach to both freshmen and new students.
MENTAL HEALTH 💚
Hello Tustin Tillers!
Welcome back to a new school year! My name is Joanne Cabrera and I am the Mental Health Specialist here at Tustin H.S. This is my 5th year at Tustin H.S. and I could not be happier to be here to support the students, staff and parents. My job includes student individual counseling, crisis intervention, facilitating support groups, creating CCR lessons on different social emotional topics, professional development for staff and parent workshops. I am very passionate about mental health wellness, and I look forward to helping students transition to being back on campus full time and making it a great and positive year!
TUSTIN ATHLETICS
Family Tradition
During this centennial year, we will often reflect on the importance of tradition and memories. Our first athlete-of-the-week, Erin McInnes, comes from a large Tiller family. Many of her siblings played volleyball at Tustin High, and she is continuing the “crane” tradition by playing with her younger sister, Kate. Erin is a four-year starter on Tustin’s Varsity Volleyball team. Although the “good vibe tribe” lost to Bolsa Grande this week, Erin still made her mark adding 27 kills and 21 digs. During her tenure as a Tiller, she has always been a person on the court that the squad depends on physically and emotionally. Erin consistently leads by example and is the first to celebrate her teammates’ successes. In addition to being the captain of the team, she is also an honors student. Erin and the rest of the team will face Santa Ana Valley next week and will hopefully add another happy moment to the memory file.
