For Heaven's Sake
April 2017
From the Principal's Desk
Dear Parents,
I hope you all enjoyed the Easter Break. It was late this year so I think it was a welcomed time away from the routine of school. The spring weather has been delightful, warm days, cool nights and gentle breezes. Also, we can’t forget the rain that helps the flowers bloom and grow.
As we enter the month of May, we are beginning our transitions to the next school year. OLQHS will celebrate with our 8th graders, as they end their time with us and begin their high school years. Our Pre-K and Kindergarten students will be stepping up to the next phase of their education at Our Lady Queen of Heaven. The 4th graders will become middle schoolers. How fast this all happens! The 2016 -2017 school year has gone by so swiftly, it has been full as all years are at OLQHS.
Thank you for your continued support throughout the year. I truly appreciate your involvement in our school and in your child's education. We are all blessed to share the wonderful achievements of our students as a Christ based community.

What's Happening at OLQHS!
"Guardian Angel of Mine" - OLQHS Author, Callie Thomas
Pre-Kindergarten Teacher, Callie M. Thomas, has written her first children’s book, "Guardian Angel of Mine." "Guardian Angel of Mine," is a loving, Christian faith–based story that will inspire your child to become more confident and closer to God. Callie has incorporated the Guardian Angel prayer into “Guardian Angel of Mine,” for every family to share. She is blessed to share this story with other families and hopes to inspire children to read and pray more often.
Pre-Order now on the website for a signed autographed book and include the recipient's name in the order notes at checkout.
Enter OLQHS in the order notes at checkout, and Callie will donate 15% of the proceeds to Our Lady Queen of Heaven’s Guardian Angel Fund. This fund was established to help families who need tuition assistance.
"Guardian Angel of Mine," will be released in the second half of May 2017; perfect timing for Pre-Kindergarten and Kindergarten Graduation, special keepsakes for those who have just made their First Communion, and for any child who wants to learn about his or her guardian angel!

1st Grade Visits Abraham's Tent!
The first grade students visited Abraham’s Tent on Tuesday, April 11, 2017. This visit is part of a Lenten service project the first grade classes participate in each year. The students are asked to do chores at home to earn money. Learning the value of hard earned money, the students then went together to the grocery store and used their money to purchase food for those in need. They then brought all of their purchased canned goods and food to Abraham’s Tent. Thank you to Ms. Pearl Cole, the director of Abraham’s Tent, who toured our students around the facility and showed them exactly how their donations help those in need!
Spanish Fun!
We are all learning about food school wide in Spanish! Students should be able to translate most Spanish when visiting Mexican restaurants. Test them out!!
Ceviche is a world wide dish popular in Peru that is shown in the picture. 4th grades have discussed in detail of how it is prepared.
Spanish 1 students also had a fashion show with their interpretations of Guatemalan huipiles.
Two Spanish 1 students, Alex Pierson & Taylor Myers were good sports when demonstrating the cracking of cascarones ( hollowed out colorful egg shells filled with confetti) on the head!
Lots of fun in Spanish!

The Art World
Well, we have quite a few new members of the Artsonia Hall of Fame!
Our new Kindergarten members are Elaina Vallete, Emma Bourgeois, Millie Stutes, and Rozlyn Neas. 1st Grade we have Amelia Lanier and in 2nd Grade, Hayden Richard, as a new members. 3rd Grade we have Asa Listi and Cara Henry and 4th Grade are Brecken Bordelon, Thomas Bebee and Finn Gage.
And last, but not least, our new member in 7th Grade is Luke Courville. Congratulations to all!!!
I hope all the Kindergarten Families loved their family portraits (including pets) with their "Cracked Easter Egg Family". Kindergarten worked very hard on their pictures. We also drew an Easter Bunny and an Easter Basket.
First Graders also drew an Easter Bunny, but then they made their beautiful Stained Glass windows with construction paper and tissue paper. They had a ball! Sorry, some of the 1st Graders went home with dyed fingers (it will wear off).
Second Graders learned to weave and made beautiful woven Easter Eggs which we laminated to use as a place mat and then we drew an Easter Bunny. Next we will make a beautiful, symmetrical butterfly--just you wait!
I infested all 3rd Graders homes with bugs!! Fortunately they were gourd bugs and cute as a button. They did a great job on their bugs! Now they are working on their Name Alien, using their cursive writing skills--they are a bit strange--but cool.
The 4th Grade art students are working very hard on their Picasso Portrait. It is an original work in the style of Pablo Picasso which they will color with cray pas (oil pastels). They will be bright and beautiful, and also...very weird!
The 5th Graders just completed their first Abstract in the style of Mr. Jay Bowdon, who came to lecture to them on his style of artwork. Mr. Bowdon came in last week and critiqued every student's picture online on the Artsonia Website. Be sure that they read it and APPROVE it (click on APPROVE) because that is the homework due after the holidays. They should be proud of their work, Mr. Bowdon surely was. We are now making Zentangles--ask them what that is.
The 7th Grade Class has finished making their wonderful Andy Warhol Style self portraits on the Wacom Tablets in the PC Lab. Their pictures are on display in the Fine Arts Hallway. They are fantastic and the students had a great time doing them! The 7th Grade students are beginning their Zentangles--ask them what that is.
Be sure to go to Artsonia's Giftshop to buy something for Mom with your child's artwork on it (for Mother's Day). Mom's Love That! Are you listening Dads?
Remember, we are creating, making messes, and most of all, having FUN!

asbestos statement
Each year parents must be informed that the school has complied with all national standards regarding asbestos on campus. Certain vinyl floors and the panels that are below the quad windows will have to be handled appropriately if ever replaced. Our report indicates that existing asbestos is in good condition and we have the highest rating given. You are welcome to examine the asbestos file in the office if desired.
