Students didn't miss a beat during this closure. While not easy, they found ways to make a difference, continued to learn and grow, and stay connected. DECA could be found on weekly Zoom meetings, FFA students held practices in preparation for online district and state competitions, FBLA students competed at the Virtual State Competition, and Sports Medicine students worked diligently to get a blood drive hosted in Yelm.
What do you do when you can't take a field trip or invite in a guest speaker? Well...you ZOOM into a CAREER. Thank you to the 30+ industry members that took a few minutes to share their story with our students. Teachers offered these career exploration activities during the closure. The videos have almost 800 views. If you haven't watched (...or listened) to one yet, I encourage you to pop on your headphones. We will continue these interviews into next year. Let us know if you would like to help.
Certifications help a student build a portfolio of skills and the ability to speak to their knowledge and accomplishments. Jaxon connected the dots between school and work after getting hired at Home Depot. Jaxon shared, "The OSHA-10 Certification I got through Advanced Stagecraft showed that I was already familiar with basic equipment and safety practices that Home Depot uses on a daily basis which is a part of what led to me getting hired as an associate."
Stackable credentials open doors to jobs that provide experience and help in obtaining their future education and careers. Check out the 30 sec video Washington Roundtable released on the "credential is essential."
What do students do to show competence in a practicum when there are no sports? They are creative and find ways to apply their passion and gain new skills. Ari Phillips taught herself to sew face masks. She told Mr. Clinton, "I have the measurements down and sew those pieces together..I tried a few things for the ears...in my opinion the rubber bands work best for fitted comfort." She made many more and donate them to Woodland Retirement Center and Cash and Carry. Proud of our students and their ingenuity!
On March 13, the students completed planting and school closed. The advisors and CTE staff stepped right up and kept the plants alive. What a tremendous team effort by the Hillary, Matt M, Dusti, Matt C, Dawn, Austin, Terri, Kathi, Deb, and Deb McLean. Thank you to advisory member Jason Witherow of Jason's Greenhouse always being there to support our program.
While not without a few challenges, this team and a few volunteers (Matt Koehler, Amy Stapleton and FFA alumni) conducted the first ever online sale and distribute all the product within a few days on behalf of the FFA members. A final thank you to all those who purchased items showing the continued support of our students and their learning.
If you missed the Virtual FFA Plant Sale Tour, check it out.
Students have competed using the ANATOMAGE table which is a 3D interactive computer table with all aspects of the human body. The company selected a few schools to pilot their new online tool during the closure. Adv Sports Med students got a guided tour on Zoom on how access this resource to demonstrate competency of standards and assist in meeting Dual Credit requirements.
