Congratulations Winners

Thank you to all the students and their families who entered a pumpkin in the Pumpkin Character Contest. It was difficult to choose just one pumpkin for each of the 5 categories since there were so many amazingly creative entries. Please congratulate the following students:

Michael G.

Constantine G.

Sebastian O.

Diya P. and Olivia D.

Stella E. and Sophia E.

Are you interested in volunteering in the library?

We are always looking for people to help shelve books, organize the Celebrating With Books program, decorate the window displays and other special activities. There is no experience necessary to volunteer. We will teach you all you need to know to help in the library. Volunteer once a week or once a month, it’s up to you! We welcome any and all the help that fits your schedule. If you are interested, please contact Lisa Funke, the librarian at or call the school at (847)998-5030.

From P.E.

Hello Glen Grove students and families! We just finished our football and fitness testing units. Students learned various football skills such as how to catch, throw, run pass patterns, and play defense during the football unit. Students also learned specific football concepts such as offense, defense, and line of scrimmage.

Fitness tests included the mile run, sit-ups, push up test, sit and reach, and the PACER. Students are also learning the components of fitness: Muscular Strength, Muscular Endurance, Flexibility, and Cardiovascular Endurance. Students are able to identify which fitness test matches up with each component of fitness.

Mile run and PACER = Cardiovascular endurance

Sit and Reach = Flexibility

Push up Test = Muscular strength and Muscular endurance

Sit ups = Muscular strength and Muscular endurance

Shuttle run = Agility

Students came home with a fitness report that shows how they did in each of these tests.

We also just finished a mini-unit of throwing. Throwing is one of the skills that students are assessed on during the first trimester. The overhand throw has five essential components for a mature pattern. The following components make up a mature throwing pattern;

  • Side to target (turn body)

  • Arm back and extended

  • Step with opposite foot

  • Rotate hips

  • Follow through across body

A third grade student is required to demonstrate three of these five components, a fourth grade student is required to have all five components, and a fifth grade student is required to have all five components using a variety of throwing objects. If a student is able to demonstrate the required components the student would earn an “M” for meeting this standard of the progress report. This will be assessed during trimester 1 and trimester 3 only.

Our next unit will be our Volleyball unit. Students will be working on the skills of bumping, setting and serving.

From the Nurse's Office

Students requiring any medications during school hours must file a medication form with the health office. This form requires a physician’s signature as well as a parent’s signature. This form can be found under the Parents Tab on the district website in the health and wellness file. All medication brought to school must be in an appropriately labeled pharmacy container. This also includes over-the-counter medicine such as Tylenol, Advil, Cough Drops, etc.

Just a reminder....if your child is out sick with a fever or vomiting please make sure they do not return to school until they are fever free or symptom free for 24 hours.

If your children come to school after 7:45 a.m. please have them come through the front office. This is for the safety of all of our students.

All student absences should be called into the health office no later than 7:55 a.m. at (847) 657-2394! The school has voicemail so parents can call the health office to leave messages at any time.

Parent Visits and Our Security System

We welcome any parents who would like to visit our school and we ask that you:

  • Please call your child’s teacher to arrange an appointment if you want to visit a classroom.
  • All visitors (including parents) will be asked to present valid state issued identication (drivers license or state i.d.) that will be entered into the system before gaining access to the school beyond the main office.
  • Sign in at the office so that we know you are in the building. We ask that you wear a District 34 visitor lanyard when visiting.
  • Please sign out and return the lanyard when leaving the building.
  • If you plan to take your child out of the building during school hours, please sign him/her out in the office.
  • We invite you to eat lunch with your child at school. Please call ahead of time to make arrangements with your child’s teacher.

Change In Dismissal Arrangements

If you need to change the after school pick-up arrangements for your child, please send a note to you child's teacher. If you need to change arrangements at the last minute, during the school day, please make sure you call our office before 2:00 p.m. to inform us of the change. There is a lot going on in a school office both at the beginning and the end of the school day. By calling before 2:00 p.m., you are giving the front office staff the time needed to locate classroom teachers and communicate the message regarding the pick-up arrangements for your child in a timely manner.

Cell Phone Usage Form

All students that carry a cell phone to school must have a cell phone usage form on file with the front office. Please fill out the attached form and send it to the Glen Grove Office. The guidelines are included in this attachment.
